I am looking at buying the Garmin RV 760LMT with Wireless Backup Camera. How is the dependability of the GPS and Camera. Is it going to be replaced with a newer model soon?

The Garmin RV 760LMT and the Garmin BC 20 came as a kit and should have been matches from the factory. The GPS saw the camera but would not connect. Now it doesn't see the camera. I have tried the pair them but if the GPS does not see the camera and it has to see the camera before pairing. I believe it is the camera that is not working.

I have used a small screen TomTom for over 6 years and now want to upgrade to a new larger screen RV dedicated GPS as my fifthwheel has increased in size and it is now much more important to avoid situations that would not be an issue years ago.
I was considering the RV GPS from Rand McNally but based on negative comments started looking further and found the Garmin RV GPS. Now I read some quite strong negatives about this one.
Now I'm not sure which one to go with.

It too is not a friendly as i could be. Now I have hooked up the camera and it doesn't work. It showed the camera was there but would not connect. Now it doesn't show it has a camera. Looked on line for help with it. Garmin works on bankers hours. Not open on Saturdays, Sundays and evenings. Probably so people are having problems cannot reach them when they need them. Even their email is difficult to use. Does anyone make a good GPS that doesn't need a tech to run and works like they say?

the manual that comes with the camera tells how to resync the camera with the garmin if it doesn't connnect. Try that first.

Remember, camera MUST have power connected for the garmin to show the icon. and you MUST use the power base that comes with the camera with the RV760. the std. RV760 base won't detect the camera.

I agree with Basecamp. powerfull program, but not my cup of tea.

I thought I would give an update on my frustration, expressed above, on the distracting โ€œcurve aheadโ€ warning.

Inspired by contact information that someone posted on one of the RV forums (I thought it was on this forum and this thread, but no) I sent Garmin Customer Service and email inquiry a couple of days ago. Below is their reply, just received.

I have 2 garmins and my son has a Tom Tom and I returned a Rand McNally......so I will say there is no perfect GPS......they all have glitches which may or may not have to do with the satellites ......Before I start my trip I review either Map quest or a paper map so if I get a funky looking route I know not to take it....

I have had one Garmin previously. I looked at the CW/Rand McNally RV GPS and while it was able to use WiFi, I didn't like how it was mounted to the window mount. I then bought the Garmin RV760LMT and like it very much.

It is NOT perfect... I just returned from a 15k trip to Alaska and back. I used it 99.9% of the time. I had four incidents that the Garmin took me on gravel roads that were maybe 9 feet wide! Or, tried to send me backwards after taking a lunch break.

I noted the four incidents and will send them to Garmin and hopefully they'll include the correct routing in a future update.

Over all I like the unit and how it is mounted to the windshield mount. I can remove and reinstall it with one hand. I found that if I entered the city the CG was in before putting in the CG name, the results were faster and more accurate. It has a LOT of CG's, BUT there are a lot of quality ones it doesn't.

The one problem I have, depending on the sun angle while I'm driving, there are times that the glare off the dashboard on the screen makes it impossible to see the screen accurately, and I do have a sunshade that helps most of the time.

As for backup cameras, I went with a Tadi Brothers hardwired camera above the license plate of the SUV (a tremendous help when aligning my hook up to my ProPride hitch, or when trying to parallel park with the stinger sticking out when I without TT) and the a camera mounted high on the back of my TT. I leave it on when traveling and can see the traffic behind me. Both have great night vision. The one problem I have is when traveling in a rain or mist, the camera will get covered with spray due to the way the wind and rain swirl over and around the TT.

I rebuilt my entire dash board to get the GPS up higher. removed the factory radio, made a bracket and bezel for it, and mounted it down low and put the backup camera screen in a "drawer".....

Also added new XM Radio receiver in a quick removable bracket that I can now move to the trailer or put on the motorcycle.

The wireless camera that came with the Garmin GPS went inside the trailer to watch the cargo (motorcycle)

The illuminated switch is to turn the camera off as needed

The XM antenna is a magnetic mount that I placed on the roof, next to the new marine AM/FM antenna I installed. All on a powder coated piece of steel

BTW...HUGE improvement of my AM/FM/ Weather Band reception with this new antenna. I was going to replace the radio as I thought it was junk. The factory antenna was junk. The radio is actually VERY good!

the RV760 routed me around a low train crossing in Arkansas back roads that that if waited to see the low overpass sign I would have to backup about mile on two lane road and I would had turn around in private drive way with ditches on both sides. Glad I had it that day. I do question the routes some times and the listing of trucks stops are incomplete. The list for camp grounds we have used several times for stops along our route. Over all I would give the it 8 out of 10 rating...

I have actually found my phone gps app to work better as far as routing goes.

Same here.. Google maps.. even Siri/Apple maps (less than perfect reputation) has bailed me out of Garmin 760 routing issues. These days I'll usually run the route by one of the above before departure. Generally google maps does a better job of routing.

I have been using Garmin's for the last 10 years, probably 7 different units. I really like the RV760 and haven't have any issues with it since I purchased it over a year ago. I keep the software and maps current. ALL GPS's will direct you down the wrong road once in a while, you have to pay attention and review the proposed route for errors and not blindly follow it.

This is my second Garmin. I bought it specifically because it was made for an RV. I bought a cheaper camera but it works great with the Garmin. I don't trust the GPS to guide me based on lots of use including cross country trips. It is not a map problem but the routing is crazy. I definitely carry paper maps and use them. I have actually found my phone gps app to work better as far as routing goes. The Garmin for RV's will definitely get you into trouble if you rely on it alone. If I had it to do over, I would not buy the Garmin but I don't have experience with other brands so I can't say if they would work any better.

I have 3 Garmin GPS's "none" of them are trustworthy. I have had a ton of trouble with just ordinary navigation. Just finished a trip where Garmin insisted I was on the wrong highway. It was dead wrong, this could have been a real disaster had I not have known and consulted a paper map. I keep it updated, at least according to Garmin instructions.
