Camper dies from carbon monoxide poisoning August 08, 2013 16:48 EDT CRESAPTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Allegany County Sheriff's Department says a camper at the fairgrounds in Cresaptown has died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Deputies say 75-year-old William E. Miller of Windber, Pa., was pronounced dead Thursday morning at his RV. His wife, 76-year-old, Ruth L. Miller, was taken to a hospital in Cumberland. Officials say the Millers started a gas generator near the rear of their RV shortly before going to sleep Wednesday night.

Deputies say the generator was only several feet from the recreation vehicle, with its exhaust pointing toward the RV. Officials say the couple fell asleep with the generator running, and exhaust fumes entered the RV.

The couple was discovered Thursday morning.

Notice the generator was running OUTSIDE the camper. Be careful out there. God rest his soul.

With this being said is there any after market stacks to attach to a Honda 6500 EU genie that could function in a toy hauler?

Sure just like modern cars are so much more unreliable and worse than ones from the 1970s. Lets go back to those too. You can have your carbureted clunker. I want a model designed for me, something embracing technology from the last ten or twenty years.

I have a class-C generator in the rear. I permanently mounted my Gen-Turi on the rear of the MH. Just so I don't get lazy. Painted it the color of the MH.

I often tell people this happens. It is why the installed Onan Generator in my motor home runs with a Gen-Turi if I'm running it more than an hour or so (2 hours limit) and I've had my CO detector set off by ANOTHER motor home's Generator as well.

Still.. As I said. I have people tellling me "It does not happen"

FOLKS. It does, reread the original post.

Are campers growing weaker with each generation? Just imaging our ancestors pioneering this country and not being able to sleep in the winters and summers without heat and A/C.

To expound on this, What is needed is a dual chamber detector that will detect CO and smoke

After a lot of research.

This is what I found.
A Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B

I suggest you read all the info and make your decision on this but I replaced the ones in my Class C with this one. They are rated for 7 years
and most are only rated for 5,If your RV is older than 5 years old and they haven't been changed they are most likely no good. Mine needed to be replaced so this was a good deal for me.

Just a reminder,a first line of defense is always the best. Check those Smoke/CO detectors and replace them if needed, all have a date on them and how long they are good for. If they don't, toss them.

While it is important to know all of your emergency exits it is also
important to be warned early, especially if you are older or have mobility issues or have small children.

I hope that this helps,It is better to be safe than sorry and it is a small price to pay for security and peace of mind.

Portable generators, RV generators= Fossils.

I recommend people always have at least one other CO detector that is battery powered, perhaps two if the rig is large.

Here in Texas, I do understand the need to run a generator at night sometimes, mainly because some nights don't cool off until 2-3 in the morning.

I am pretty sure a Gen-Turi is the fix for this. I wish Onan would make (or "bless") a model, because as it stands now, the generator stacks can void the warranty.

The issue with Onan no approving anything is they don't want to assume the liability associated with something out of their control. The have zero control over the design/installation beyond saying a conditional NO. Note that is says "CAN" and not "WILL".

That being said, has anybody has an issue with a genturi or other exhaust extension? You will likely hear a resounding "NO".

A year ago coming home from Florida overnighting at the Flying J just outside of Ohio our carbon monoxide alarm went off at 3.30 AM,this idiot from "quebek" pulled his fiver right alongside us and was running it's built-in genny with the exhaust pointing 3 feet away directly at our forward storage bay door, after waking us both from a sound(and needed)sleep I got up and knocked on their door several times but they refused to answer so at that point I decided to pull up stakes and head back to Ontario however I did leave him a note on his windshield thanking him for trying to asphyxiate us with it's genny's exhaust and allowing me four odd hours of sleep and hoped he had a pleasant night,of course being Canadian and I only read write and speak the Queen's English I doubt my "French" neighbour could understand the note so in the end I doubt it learned anything about his inconsiderate action. Like Ron White pointed out"you can't fix stupid".

Almost lost a couple of good friends onboard a boat from genny CO. They had double anchored their boat, so that it could not swing much like a parked RV. The light breeze changed direction bringing the fumes right back to the boat.

Something to be aware of. Which way, if any, is the air around you flowing?
