Have noticed a difference in readings as to whether I use the right hand finger or the left hand finger.

Is there a preferred site to take blood for reading?

I was also told to wash your hands good before testing to remove any sugars from the surface.
Once statement made here has me wondering. Blood oxygen was mentioned. I often vary the time I take my morning reading, often within minutes of removing my CPAP Mask. What difference would I expect?

I've noticed the same thing. I test mostly on left hand but sometimes the right. The difference of two points or five won't make to much change with the same dose. I take Lantus and without any guidance from anyone it is now at 90 units at night, whcih most days will maintain, within a few points the average from when I wake up. I still have to adjust with Novalog 30 units at meals and adjust after 3 hours if needed. tried 200 units of Lantus, 100 ad bedtime and 100 units 12 hours later and still had to take lots of Novolog plus it made me feel like******all day. I'm going to have to find an Endocronologist. I've aske to see on, at the VA for 20 years. I have to have severe problems instead of stopping me from getting to that point. They could hopefully make lise so much better.

I've noticed differences but not more than 5 points. Wish the home test A1c device would come down in price.

I prefer to use my thumbs but I only test once a day normally. My other fingers seem more sensitive.

Take a good look at your fingertips with a magnifier sometime. Mine looks like a well used pincushion.

You can use the same finger and get varied results. Different meters guarantee varied results by different percentages, but all, I believe, are within 10%. Some ads suggest you can use the fore arm and such, but the furthermost extremity (fingers, hands) give the best results.
I test 6 time a day, left hand for odd numbered days, right, even. Use every finger on the hand and then the heel.

A1c is the real test. Finger prick is a guide, there are so many variables it's amazing the accuracy is what it is.

I thought I'd chime in...

For 15 years now the TWO sites I have used are... look at your "finger prints"; ring finger off center of the finger print toward the pinky on the ring finger. That has always provided more than sufficient blood, is NEVER sore, has no scarring. Don't get too far around to the side and stick into the joint/boney area.

Worst finger to get blood from is the index finger.

Do not stick directly into the finger print pad of your finger unless you want soreness.

I asked my dh this and he said he can do the same finger 5 minutes later and get as much as 20 difference. So his answer is much the same as everyone else, makes no difference.

Yes, I seem to use the same finger, and when it hurts, I switch. I didn't mention that I have arthritis in my hands .. 'old age isn't for wimps' was something a lady once told me and I keep remembering as I celebrate birthdays in the 70s.

Sorry for the late response but yes you can use it. It's not mine but I liked it and use it. I don't remember how I came about it.

I tend to use the same finger a lot but my dr's nurse said to rotate the fingers maily to keep from hurting the fingers but using the same one doesn't bother me and yes when I have switched fingers I do get different readings
