....But according to Indiana Police, just five miles over the speed limit could result in something much more serious than a fine, hey are talking about asset forfeiture.
Last trip north we went I75 through Ohio, and only one bad spot, miles of road work around Cincinnati. On way back, needed find a campground for the night, found one that ended up halfway between I75 and I69.
Only one with any spaces.
Stupid GPS, the whole trip kept trying to redirect us ti I69. When we left we went I69, and rough roads and the whole common experience of Indy and that Interstate.
Won't be doing it again, until Indiana declares this idea dead.
Five mile over? Everyone was running 10-20 mph over and more.
If they do this then they would have to have pretty large sales lot for out of state cars and RVs. They wouldn't be stupid enough would they, to do it to Indiana Citizens. The firestorm would decimate the capitol. Out of state Drivers would too I imagine once it got beyond a hand full of Drivers.

The OP has some kind of "agenda".

Timbs' was involved in a drug deal - his vehicle was seized.
Need more info: Google is your friend.

CA has a vehicle seizure law for *spectating* at an illegal drag race (on the street).

Don't do drugs. Don't street race.

You have an agenda apparently trying to bring politics into and the Political Leftist media (trusted source)

What agenda?
We have carried considerable sums of cash and with good reason wondered if we might suffer one of these nightmares.
Many many innocent of anything people, have had to go to court to get their money or part of it back. Many don't try as attorneys aren't cheap.
Banking Officer advised us not to carry x amount on us or in coach.

Don't you ever watch/read the news? This has been going on since At Least the 1980s when certain Louisiana jurisdictions along I-10 were stopping out of state folks that looked like they were moving and seizing their property/vehicles. They only targeted people who looked like that they didn't have a lot of money (and therefore not financially able to fight them in court). I have read/watched literally dozens of these incidents in the ensuing years. Google is your friend if you want to educate yourself (well, maybe not Your friend).

Why would it take that for you to be concerned about police stealing peoples property?

I suggest you find a trusted source, and look up the federal law, and the law in your state.

IMHO, the time to worry is when the man that made the argument gets home, and does not see torches and pitchforks. At the very least his face should be posted all over town on "UNWANTED" posters, no business should be required to serve him

Define BS. You think it does not happen? That it should happen? We should not discuss it? Or not discuss it on a forum of travelers?

Yes, use Google. Learn that it was argued that the car could be seized for any infraction

CA has a vehicle seizure law for *spectating* at an illegal drag race (on the street).

So you see people acting stupid, stop to be sure you don't get involved, loose your car? What if the state decides the need more cars? Now we can't watch dancers?

One of the founding principles of United States is "innocent until proven guilty". Until he is tried and convicted, he is not a drug dealer. In way to many instances, cash or goods are seized, and because not enough evidence for conviction, no charges are filed.
Years back the head of Kansas HP was asked how the budget cuts would affect the department's operation. "With the changes in Co. laws we will be watching all out of state east bound traffic" To me he had the expectation of adding to the budget.
The head of DEA told the National Press Club the nation wide system of plate readers would likely not slow the movement of drugs, but would lead to more CAF.
The newest Mo state park is on property that the DEA decided the owner was not doing enough to curb drug use by people attending concerts on the grounds.
A band was touring the country collecting money for a charity. Law enforcement in OK seized the money. The band was able to attract press attention, the story was picked up nationally, and instead of having the press investigate, they gave the money back.
Like I have said before, when I swore to protect the constitution it had so many amendments I couldn't keep track. Now it's just got one.

These tales of the police state abusing us as citizens are important. In fact, they demonstrate that it isn't just an Indiana problem. And that in turn demonstrates that the article the OP was all upset about was nothing but click bait. If we as travelers avoid any state where this might occur, we won't be doing much travel, not even in our home state.

In Tn I can remember a few instances one I was aquainted with, but didn't involve vehicles, A small businessman who did landscaping took cash from his bank and was to fly somewhere, to purchase supplies of some sort. They waylaid him at the airport and took his money. It took him quite a long time to get it back and in the meantime lost his business because of it.
Locally our LEOs caught a rug runner, thinking back roads safer. They took 30,000.00 that was in their possession. I believe in that case they went to prison.
We have special units at pull outs and pull arounds all over our Interstates looking for drugs.
On I40, west bound especially, they had Officers outside their jurisdictions and Highway Patrol, in fist fights over who was going to watch which stretches.
Lots of money was made and still is as I40 West sees a lot lot of drug trafficking. I75 and I24 too.
I vaugely remember an incident involving motorhomes but so long ago I don't remember details.

The Poice would not be stealing property the Police do not write laws they enforce laws. If you don't like the law get the stars and bars don't read on me crowd to change them by legislation.

I agree. I still do not know how this practice has not been shot down simply from the lack of due process aspect. Then the whole, is the value of the forfeiture appropriate for the crime. But that is full circle as was there even a crime?

Even if a crime exists its wrong. If the court awards damages, I can see the court taking possession and liquidating the asset to pay the damages because you won't, but I see no reason why LE should have anything to do.
