Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Another member suggested a new forum section with new products but it doesn't look like it will be feasible. So I thought I would post this here under General RVing Issues. If enough people post (even if you have mentioned it before in another post) we can keep it near the top?

Do you have a handy hint, a new product or an old product that makes your RVing or Camping much better?

(Sorry, no commercial advertising allowed)

I'll start:

Someone in the Camping Van posted a reference to using a Super-Chamois to wipe down their shower. I have been using an icky old thick sponge and I like the chamois idea so much more.

Now I want to hear what works for you

We keep a welcome mat and a boot scraper by the RV steps so we can clean off the mud & dirt before we enter.

Just a reply of caution, Please be careful when hammering stakes, pipes, etc into the ground at Campgrounds and Rv parks. Dh and I owned a Park and had someone hammer thru water pipe, not fun! Took sometime finding that one! Water was easy to find, the punctured pipe was not! All that digging up (grass)and searching just so someone could have a darn football teams flag pole! Rv-Bella

Good point, so disregard my post. However, one would think that proper appearances to codes would insure that all utilities are buried deeper than 8 inches.

I see satellite dishes mounted on huge tripods and then weighted down with gallon jugs etc. I made a simple tripod stand out of a piece of exhaust tubing and 1/2" rod. Takes very little room to store and is easy to setup. Just jam or hammer it into the ground and your good to go. Also, I sawed off the LNB arm and added a hinge to facilitate storage. Hope the pictures show how easy it is.

Did I read right? Oven cleaner to clean upholstery??? I can't imagine there being anything left to smell. Maybe, more details would help? Easy-off spray or what?

That was my thought, too. Oven cleaner on uphostery???

Easy off...spayed on, then lightly scrubbed then hosed off and let dry...took the smell right off. I would (and did) test on a small spot to make sure the fabric color would not run. Again, took the smell right away to my wifes satisfaction. Crazy I know, but it worked.

I would be afraid to "hose" off my apholstery...

One product that fits all of the subject categories is Velcro. I "rediscover" it every few years and have been fastening things down for my twelve hundred mile trip to Texas. My only question is which side goes on the wall? If I want to stick my remote control on the wall, which piece goes where?

Soft side on the movable piece. Otherwise it sticks to blankets, skin, hair, pets etc. We velcro everything!!

Radio Shack carries the really heavy duty velcro, actually more of a plastic, which is the same stuff that is used to hold on Smart Tags/Easy Pass to windshield.

Saw that once at a bar here in Fairbanks... just goes to show you what a little imagination and a lot of alcohol can come up with!

I have used poster putty for years to fasten down my tv's...travelled 1,000's of miles and never lost one. Go to the stationary dept. Of WalMart and you will find it--four strips to a package for $1.00. Just make four soft balls out of 2 strips by rolling in your warm hands and then stick it on four corners of the tv set--press the tv down onto your shelf...It is completely removable (with a little effort) and cleans off completely, and reusable. We use it for tons of stuff...not horizontal surfaces though for heavy stuff! Don't have to put lamps etc. away when moving..

Jim102 - I would think the velcro would hold, but how are you going to secure the velcro to the TV and the shelf? Will the sticky material that holds each side down hold a TV?

I bet it could Jim102, with enough of the 2" wide velcro you can hold about anything in place.

Just think of those stupid velcro suits, wehere you can jump off a trampoline and the velcro will hold you to the wall! I think David Letterman used to do that on his show.

Ditto on the velcro. And another thing to consider is if the hook side is the mobile part, will it be moved around a lot and be subjected to lint and fibers which might make it not stick as well.
