Health Insurance for RV Travel

Humana is pulling out of Texas at the end of the year, and my wife, who is not Medicare eligible, will be losing her PPO health insurance plan. It appears that only HMOs will be available in our area, but HMOs seem to be very localized and make obtaining health care outside your local area very difficult. Most will pay for emergency care, but that is limited to emergency room only.

Getting sick while traveling outside your home state or insurance coverage region could be financially ruinous. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Does anyone have experience with health cost sharing plans such as Altrua, the plan recommended by Escapees? At a recent RV rally, there was a person selling plans for emergency travel home in case of illness. Does anyone have any experience with these?

We have a Medicare provider called Scan Health and we are very, very happy with them. If they are available in your area you should check them out.

Thanks for info. I retire in 10 years and not sure what I'll do. Not sure anyone knows what they do. Sometimes I think about retiring early and hitting the road.

And - bad thing is - you can research, move, find something that works and it can all change again in a year.

https://www.rverinsurance.com/

Just a clarification.....The above link is an individual-owned company recommended by Escapees that gives many insurance options, including Altura. Escapees does not specifically recommend Altura. It has nothing to do with Escapees. It recommends this company - RVer Insurance Exchange and Altura happens to be an alternative listed to normal medical insurance. It is a healthcare sharing ministry plan. Be sure to investigate it thoroughly as it is quite different from regular medical insurance.

We live in Georgia, and just got our letter from Humana that they will not be offering our current plan, which was a national POS, in 2017. We are early retirees, and have no other option for health insurance than to purchase on the exchange. For the past 2 years, the Humana plan was the only one with nationwide coverage available to us. That came in very handy when I suffered an injury that required surgery and hospitalization while we were on the other side of the country earlier this year.

We have just started full timing, so it looks like our solution will be to move someplace that will offer a national coverage plan. We won't be able to start research until the 2017 exchange plans are made available on November 1. Then we will have to find someplace to domicile based primarily on health care access.
