Just a Suggestion:Theft

We had several break-ins at the Storage facility. Four units the first time and mine, again, 3 weeks ago. Both times mine was the only one they didn't get inside. Due to the Deadbolt and leaving the bathroom door open to prevent them being able to lift the Laundry Flap in the floor.

BTW:I changed the locks on my Sunnybrooke to Barrel Locks, but just haven't got around to it on the Monty!

During my discussion, with the Deputy, I asked why they overlook the Propane Tanks. He told me that they start taking them when they need to stay warm.

I thought about the fact that we could start putting our rigs License Number on the bottom of the Tanks and then the PD could trace it back to us and charge Possession of Stolen Property as a start!

There was a guy in Indiana with a Honda Element SUV who had his cat stolen. He figured they would be back again so he slept by the front door each night. Finally 4 months later, they came back and a beating ensued :B

I find that thieves will always hit up a spot a second time if they get away with it the first time.

I work for AT&T, we kept getting hit over and over. They would throw a rope over our cable and pull down as much as they could with trucks.
Break into our offices, steal all our supplies.
In one of my towns the local scrap yard had a big sign about 100ft from our office that listed the price of copper. Tell me they didn't know where all that copper was coming from.

The crazy thing was... They might steal 3 ft of cable, which might get them $10, but it might cost us thousands to replace.

The theft has slowed, due to new ID laws, but it still occurs.

My neighbors 5th wheel had steps going up to the bedroom that could be lifted so clothes could be dropped into a hamper in one of the lower compartments.. handy but again could give access to someone to wiggle in from the compartment..

You just can't convince me that the scrap dealers aren't aware of who is bringing them copper. Over and over again? Obviously there are dealers who are promoting the copper wire thievery.

Here it seems to be catalytic converter theft, especially lifted 4 wheelers with large tires which allows the thief to just slide under, sawsall in hand and done in very short order. Most MH's fall into this category, easy to slide under. Catalytic conv. have Palladium in them that brings a good price from a shady scrap dealer.

I just retired. Most of the scrap places are so crooked. Not too long ago, I had a call where some fools were stealing manhole covers. I went directly to the closest scrap yard before even making the scene. Yup, manhole covers in their backseat. Crack is a wonderful thing isn't it.

Pickup tailgate "business" has been booming for as long (or longer than) copper re-sales.

Better return for (usually) *WAY* less effort.

You're getting full price for your copper. The skells selling the power cords are getting pennies on the dollar. Of course, there are honest scrap yards but the skells know where the dis-honest ones are.

Laws? I know someone who went to a scrap yard with about 400 pounds of cast iron sewer drain pipe. The guy said need a building permit to order to drop the pipe off and be paid for it. Well, what does every do it your selfer do at that point?

He thinks oh no now what do I do? The friendly scrap dealer has an answer because he knows the look on your face and that deer in the headlight look!!! He says if you want to throw it over there in the corner I'll have old Joe slip it into one of the gondolas but I cant pay you for it. Ok Ok Thanks mister scrap yard man, thanks!!

I talked to a friend of mine who has a very large farm here in eastern Oregon about the theft of wire from the circle sprinklers in the fields. they had a lot of trouble with crack heads stealing the copper wire from them but now Oregon has a law that requires all salvage yards to record who what and where before they give out money or take any thing in now. wire theft came to a screeching halt around here.

The storage facility where we keep ours was broken into about 5 yrs ago and again about 3 yrs ago. Oddly enough they did not take any power cords off the units that were plugged in. Or any propane tanks. They did take my 50 amp cord, but only because it was in the basement. Did not bother the 30 amp cord I was using for power.
Most units they just forced the basement doors open with a screwdriver or something, and did not even damage the doors. Shows how strong the locks are. Took mostly tools and small items. Did not bother an air compressor I had there.
Did not get inside mine, but two nearby they just broke out the door windows, reached in and unlocked the deadbolt, and forced the door open, and took TVs, DVD players/sound systems, other electronics, and any thing else they could find of any value.
I now have my name and ID number etched and/or painted on everything and serial numbers written down of everything that has one.
