Just for fun - RV's in 30 years...

So, DW and I are about 25-30 years from buying our 'retirement rig.' Last night, that got me thinking.

When I think of what our TT has that was not part of trailers 30 years ago (multiple televisions, outside kitchen, power jacks, power awnings, microwaves, multiples slides, etc...) it made me wonder...What will become a regular part of RV's 25-30 years from now that we don't have today?

There will be a few changes over the next 30 years that will significantly impact the RV industry.

The most obvious being the baby boomers will be gone so there will be a lot of consolidation and downsizing resulting in fewer manufacturers.

I think the next most significant change will be driven by gas pricing and alternative energy, both will develop significantly over the next 30 years.

Besides these I would bet that RV's will be more similar to today than different.

It will be no more than 1000lbs and pulled with a SmartCar because gas is $10/gallon. Car and trailer will be made in China or India.

1969 brand new Chevy truck and TT for our family. 350/400/373 12 bolt, life was good. Mileage? 10 MPG over thousands of miles over many years of vacations towing our TT.

Fast forward to 2013. What do the new gasoline trucks get towing? 8 to 10 MPG towing about the same size trailer. :E That is the same or worse we got 40 years ago!

Over 40 years and 0 gain in towing fuel economy does not bode well for RVing when the next fuel price jump comes.

I think the battery and power systems will be much different as they still seem to be a weak link. Lithium ions or future batteries will take over. Mobile internet will probably happen soon. Class Bs with upward metal slides (Sportsmobile will probably do this first)? Better springs, shocks, driveability

Maybe things that are mildly painful will be super simplified such as filling and emptying tanks as well as hook-ups.

All RV companies have merged into Lippert. They have found a company to make tires cheeper then China. Doesn't matter because the tax rate is 65% and no one can afford to RV.

I agree with lightweight and small. I think you will see only one appliance in place of oven, stove, grill and microwave.

I think 'run flat' tires on trailers and MoHo will happen before that. Seems to be a weak point with trailers anyway.

Our little honey is now at 27 years and we do not have multiple televisions, outside kitchen, power jacks, power awnings, multiples slides, basement storage, rubber roof or payments. It fits our needs and I am a firm believer in KISS keep it simple stupid.

Given the EPA NHTSA designs everything they will probably be pop ups with a 25 hp engine or optional turbo model of 30 hp. Fuel mileage will be about 14 on Indiana Interstates.

Light weight and smaller units. I'm more curious of what the trucks of the future will be able to handle. Diesel/ hybrids maybe sold as a package with the trailers to create a better fit. More slides to make smaller trailers feel e an bigger. Automation of all eletical devices.

I hope they will not still be running the suspension and brakes designed in the 40`s! (1940`s). and I pod connections will go the way of the VCR.
