mobile internet

Gotta say when I pack up the MH to move on down the road that USB plug gets wrapped up very very carefully!

The good thing about being fulltime...it stays plugged in all the time and it not constantly moved. However, having a spare is peace of mind!

We too still have an unlimited 3g plan with Verizon....last year we downloaded all three seasons of Homeland....could not believe how much data that used...over 130 gigabytes!!!

It was slow, but sure was glad it was unlimited! They will have to pry it out of my hands!

Wow, lucky you .... that unlimited plan is worth it's weight in gold.

Now ... if only your speeds were 5GB/s or faster with that unlimited data so that you could stream Netflix movies at high definition anywhere you could get cell tower reception when out with the RV.

Our home setup is unlimited at just over 5GB/s download speeds and the HD movie streaming sure is nice! I wish we could duplicate that in our RV. 😞

We use a Verizon Jetpack in our RV. It's 4G speeds are fast enough for video streaming, but Verizon data plans (that we can afford) are too stingy to permit much movie streaming on RV trips ... which I love to do in the evenings, especially if the evening weather is too nasty to sit outside.

I hope the general "data limit" pricing situation changes soon for U.S. mobile broadband customers. We're in general getting ripped off on mobile broadband compared to the rest of the world, but fortunately some of the powers-that-be are beginning to take notice.

I can tell of our experience with T-Mobile. Picked up one of their mobile hotspots last year. Went from Michigan to Montana and back. Totally worthless the entire way. No service at all (either driving or at any place we stayed).

My wife had much better coverage from our TracPhones.

Looks like, with the plan I have with ATT, I pay no more per GB for "overage" than I do for the first 4 or 8 GB, if I am on 4G LTE.

But, even at those uninflated data rates, I could use enough GB watching a two-hour movie, that it would be cheaper to just go buy the BluRay disc package. Also, ATT does not have 4G LTE in most of the places I would stop while traveling in the RV, nor does anybody else, because I am in the empty middle of the country where population density is too low to financially support the service. In these places, Verizon doesn't even have voice coverage without roaming, which is why I can't buy their service.

So it comes down to Where? And are you willing to pay for it?

Millicom just did a price increase, in a world where cell plans get cheaper and cheaper they just did a MAJOR price increase.. Verizon likes to do those too per my daughter who just jumped off that ship onto another carrier.

One thing to consider when you shop for cellular internet is what happens when you go over the limit.. Video seems to average about a gig and hour. I've seen hour long low-res video at about a quarter gig, and high res at up to 4 gig, but the average seems to be about 1gig per hour.

Far as I know most of the pay in advance plans, Millicom, Virgin Mobile and such you hit the limit and they simply cut you off, the only page you can access is the pages to enter payment.

Verizon: Monthly plan: You hit the limit and they do send you warnings, but you have to read them.. But you BREAK the limit, they break your bank account, overage charges are a real pain.

T-mobile You hit the limit,,, You drop to 3G. But no extra charge.

I have hit my T-mobile plan limit twice, both times on the last day of the billing period, and I got lots of warnings, SMS, E-mail and device warnings. Usually the next day on the E-mail (After it reset).

ALL providers... Verizon seems to have the best coverage but not one of the companies in the cellular business is 100%,, all have dead spots.

If you're feeling brave, you can "buy" grandfathered Verizon data plans on Craigs / fleabay

A bit pricey, but cheaper than paying overage fees if you are a heavy user.

X2 on Millenicom, and you can add on all the 20GB data blocks you need at just $90 each. Stream all you want, just bring the big wallet.

Wouldnt streaming Netflix or whatever cost you a fortune on a mobile device?

I am in Canada, am on cellular. We get 20 gig per month for $90.....no Youtube, Netfix or anything like that and we use that 20 gig+ every month. Its nice because we can take it with us wherever we go. Drove right across Canada a couple of years ago, wife had internet in the van all the way. The odd spot wouldnt get signal.
