Need to completely regroup, looking for a toad for Fleetwood

Hi, folks. We've been trying to find a "small" truck we can tow; thought we wanted a Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon. Now we find our Fleetwood Southwind Storm is rated to tow only 3500 lbs. Any truck we can find weighs more than that. We have 29 days to find something if we're going on our planned dream trip. Our next choice would be a convertible. DH doesn't want to do a Beetle because Volkswagen won't say they're towable. The situation is rapidly deteriorating! Any good ideas out there? And thanks for all the help you were when we were looking for a truck.

The small hyundais and kias are 2700lb and less and have a lot of room. Autos are not towable but the standards are.

You might look at a std cab ranger with standard and maybe a 4cyl. My 4.0 SC manual (94) is just under 4k with me in it.

Look at Suzuki Sidekicks, Viraras and Grand Vitaras. My GV is not a rag top but it does have a sunroof with a retractable solid liner.

The older Toyota and Nissan pickups weighed a good deal less (nearly 1000#) than current ones. Gonna be hard to find a decent older one. Auto trans could be an issue too, but older 4WD might have a transfer case with Neutral. Get back into 1980's and early 1990's it doesn't seem owner's manuals discussed RV towing.

Agree with above. If you are looking for a 4 seater look at a fit. If you only need two consider a smart convertible. Way fun and they do well on gravel roads. Very easy to get in and out with big doors and high seats.

Our Honda Fit is working out great. It only weighs 2500 lb and will carry a astonishing amount of stuff with the rear seats down.

Older Chevy Tracker was the lightest Toad I could find and I looked ALL over for a lightweight toad. Just because I did 'not' want to tow at the max weight my MH could tow.

Unless you have a DP towing maxed out or even right at the rating, is IMHO just not a pleasant experience. Ya you can tow it on a flat road but even slight hills with a heavy toad and you will be going up them at 30 mph.

Take a look at escapees forum for you toad.
There are a plethora of toads for sale all set up for towing for sale there. Most from full timers pulling off the road. AND they are all RV'ers and know the weight specs of their toads.
With only 20 some days till you lift off it would be a big bonus to buy one already set up with base plate and wiring for brakes.

I just sold my toad on there in one day! :C

Here is the link. You just sign up for the forum no need to join the escapees club to use the forum/classified.
