New Video: "Coffee - No Generator"

A few weeks ago a member here created a thread about videos folks have made of their camping experiences. I enjoyed watching many of them, and realized I needed to explore new styles in my own video-making. I needed a faster pace for one thing.

Also, I've been noticing a number of posts over the years about generators. A lot of people seem to mention coffee makers as a reason to get a generator. Well, ever since I can remember, our method of making coffee while camping has not required electricity. I thought it would be nice to share our method.

Put these two things together, and I had a project.

So here's my latest attempt to improve my video-making ability: A how-to video on coffee making with no generator.

Enjoy!
It's just Mrs. SpeakEasy and me now (empty-nesters). But we can choose from among 7 grandchildren to drag along with us!

Enjoyed the video. Since DW doesn't drink coffee, I have been using the Aeropress one cup coffee maker for many years. Easy and makes a great cup of coffee. I just fill my coffee cup with water, pour it into a saucepan and heat it up. Electric not needed.

Nice job on the vid. Coffee is a beautiful thing.

I just use the pot to measure water, pour it into a pan, boil it on the stove and pour it over the coffee grounds in the coffee maker. It drips as you go making coffee. Of course you can't pour a full pot of water at once, just a little at a time, but it works.

I love the coffee out of our Mr. Coffee electric brewer. Since I have a good battery bank, solar charging and a 2000W inverter, I can brew the coffee and keep it hot without having to run a generator.

I use one of these... Gounds go in its own compartment between the top and bottom container. Best drip coffee ever, but that may be because I'm camping but....

The "Mr Coffee" method has worked well for us for years when there's no shorepower and we can't or don't want to run the generator. It's simple and requires no extra equipment, just a standard pan to heat on the stove. We pour the finished pot of coffee into an insulated "Airpot" carafe that keeps it hot for hours.

Nice! I'll have to give that a whirl. I'll admit I do fire up the generator just to use the Keurig, but I'm willing to try new things

Have you tried the funnel system using those little Keurig doo-hickeys?..just punch holes in the top and bottom and hold over the cup with tongs? Might be tricky, though.

The Keurigs blast hot water through the cups under some pressure which would be tough to duplicate. For me anyway. I'm sure some genius has done it. In a pinch you could tear a bunch open and do it the old-fashioned way, but that would be expensive.

We rediscovered this method of making coffee on the first trip of the season one year. We left the coffee maker in the coach over the winter and the water in the heater reservoir froze and cracked it (pot metal). First coffee of the first trip the water leaked all over the counter. Boiled some water, put a filter in the basket with some coffee and made a pot. Stopped at Walmart and got a new maker.

This year we bought a Melita for the days we'll be dry camping.

I make coffee in our RV all the time using the propane cooktop, instant coffee, and a titanium cup. No mess, nothing to wash up afterward (heat directly in the cup and wipe it out with a paper towel for the next use), and no noise.

P.S. I hate the taste of any coffee anyway - just want some warm morning buzz - so cream and sugar cover up any instant coffee "downside". BTW, contrary to urban myths ... there now ARE designer instant coffees available that taste pretty much "good".

We always used a stovetop perculator for coffee when dry camping. It makes the very best coffee!!

... and for toast: butter the bread and plop them in a frypan and you'll have an awesome treat.

And yes, for coffee, unless you wake up way before "generator hours" in some locations, and then we've successfully used Plan B (see above.)

That's exactly my issue. I'm that "morning person" everyone loves to hate. If I'm not up and doing something before dawn I feel like I'm wasting the day.

And for the record, I know how to make coffee without electricity. I've just been too lazy to get the apparatus since acquiring my RV a few years ago. While the OP's method is impressive, his video inspired me to purchase a good old-fashioned stovetop, percolator coffee maker. Brown will bring it to my door by Thursday.
