Pilot flying j issue

Traveling to Florida , I decided to use pilot flying j for gas because of the discount. I received a message from my card company that Pilot had put a 500 dollar hold on my account rendering the card non usable for several days. Pilot has no business screwing with my account. Good Sam ought to inform members that this scenario exists. I will no longer purchase gas from them because I donโ€™t need the grief while traveling. My credit is excellent and Iโ€™m ready to tell all of the above to shove it.

Some people use a smaller credit limit card for gas expenses, so large ripoffs are unlikely if the card is compromised. Supposedly gas pumps are one of the most likely locations to have one's card information stolen. Yeah, the CC companies will most likely eat the cost if your $30,000 card is severely misappropriated but it costs all of us in the end. Some people just like to limit their risks.

What part do you think is being 'made up'
*Holds being placed on CC

*Folks using low credit limit cards for fuel to minimize their risks
*Gas stations high scam locations....fake scanners/ employees that are thieves
*CC companies covering charges from theft

I use GasBuddy, an app that finds the best-priced fuel around where I am, or where I am going or along the way. This app is great. It is also important that when you have the opportunity you confirm that the price charged is what the app says it is, or you update what the price is when you filled-up. Granted it doesn't solve the issue with the credit card hold however it will save you money and time searching for a better price.

Most stations do it, but rarely a hold of $500.

I have been using the Pilot /Flying J card for a long time and have never had any kind of hold put on the card, I still have elite card for a couple more years and that is 7 cents a gallon. We usually go to Dothan Al. for gas and it is about .20 to .30 cents a gallon cheaper than Fl. and as for diesel it is usually cheaper in this area than the other local stations the only diesel I use is for my tractor and I get off road diesel in Faydette Al..

I'm always surprised when people buy gas/diesel at Pilot/Flying J/Loves. Even with the discount cards, you're still paying MUCH more than the other gas stations that are usually right across the street.

Often $0.30 - $0.50/gallon more. That adds up over time.

How much of a discount are you getting? At the local Pilot here in Ft. Myers, they want $3.099/gallon for diesel. Everywhere else it's $2.699 - $2.799.

X2, X3 & X4.

The only time I buy fuel from them is if I spend a night in their yard. Other then that, I can almost always save at least $.30 per gallon. I figure by the time I need six new tires for my DP, I'll have paid for them by avoiding Flying J / Loves.

As for the hold, just go inside and tell them how much you want to spend. Even if you don't know, let's say you tell them 75 gal and only use 70 gal, they'll credit the rest back to the card and there won't be any hold.BillBill

It's common to have a small hold put on it while fueling but that's ridiculous.

I would bet if you were the station owner and had drive offs and bad cards run through your station, a $500 hold would look like extremely cheap protection.

Stands to reason, Flying J, HIGH VOLUME, HIGH DOLLAR TRANSACTIONS, RVs with BIG TANKS will = larger hold.

Bet if the OP went to a smaller low profile CONSUMER fuel station the holds they use will be far less..

Not sure why the OP or anyone would be surprised.

And yeah, don't understand why the OPs card would have such a SMALL credit limit, unless they don't have good credit or are a high credit risk..

Best to have SEVERAL credit cards to shuffle around..

When we have used Pilot/Flying J, we tell them the max we will be getting and that is what they set the pump to and use for the hold. Some of these coaches that hold 150-200 gallons could easily put 500 worth in the coach so if you don't tell them you will be using less, you can't fault them for putting that much of a hold on your card.

The hold will be gone once the actual amount charged has processed in usually two or three days. If your card only has a 500 limit on it (as you implied), it's time to upgrade!!

When I started out full time I scheduled my gas stops for flying j. Between the insanity of just getting my coach in and out of their NOT RV friendly pump islands, forget trying to get propane all together, and being treated like **** by the register employees at 4 different station's concurrently across 4 states? I stopped going there. You can't pay me to get fuel at a flying j.

New rv'ers need to know that stopping at any gas station off the interstate that welcome trucks will give you a FAR BETTER EXPERIENCE fueling up! :c

It sounds like you may have a pretty low credit limit. Ask for an increase. 10 to 20K seems reasonable to me for a VISA card. I have never had a problem.
