Should I submit an insurance claim

I did some minor cosmetic damage to my 5th wheel when I hit a parking lot post. I immediately called my National General agent and opened a claim. They haven't sent an adjuster yet. But now as I look at it I'm thinking I can fix it myself.

Now I'm thinking perhaps it would be better to tell them "nevermind" since I really don't want to get dropped right before my next trip. What do you folks think? Oh, I got this policy through Good Sam.

Thanks, Pete

Too late to change your claim now. Once you called ,it is on record!

This is not exactly true - If you cancel the claim and the insurance company doesn't write a check then there isn't any activity and you won't be liable for a rate increase.

Neither statement is 100% correct. It depends on the insurance company. With some a simple phone call is the same as a claim.

Going beyond the original question. The claim adjuster can make a big difference in the way a claim is handled. I had a claim for the electric awning that I damaged backing in. He wrote it up as a act of god claim, usually weather related. No premium increase, Be nice to them.

Depending on the OP's situation he may be required to have insurance by his bank.

The companies that I represented would show the claim on the insured's record. I had one lady who put in 4 claims, none paid out, and they non-renewed her policy.

I guess I must have been lucky. I had a number of claims on my comp insurance, once for hitting a post and damaging several panels on my TT, another for when I hit several orange barrels on the freeway when I flinched when a FED Ex semi triple crowded me andI popped the front awning leg on another TT and they replaced the whole thing and then on the MH they replaced the slide toppers and the main awning when I got in a 70 mph wind in Death Valley. A year later I found water inside the MH from a roof leak caused by a branch hitting the top. All this with no increase in premiums except for an annual one. Then I hit a tire carcoss in the highway and bent the crossover tail pipe and they called it collision and dropped my comp. Bummer. $250 ded and the bill was $210. Changed to General and lowered my premiums.

Did you deductible get raised? I have a coworker and the only thing he had was a claim for hail damage on his house. They didn't raise his rates, but they raised his deductible to the tune of about $2000.

Again, I don't know because I don't have RV insurance on my TT. But, my auto insurance has "accident forgiveness" where they will forget about a minor accident now and then. Or, so they say. I haven't had a accident in 35 years.

I agree. No money paid out=no claim. That's the way it should be. Ask your insurance company to be sure.

True, some companies do, some companies don't. However with the current state of the business world looking to maximize profits, I imagine more and more will.

FWIW, Consumer Reports ranks USAA as number one consumer insurer.

The atmosphere can also be different at mutual insurance companies, when you buy a policy, you are a part owner in the company.
