We were driving up 321 earlier running 70 MPH. A 3500 with what looked like a 28' toy hauler passed us. We watched it as it SWAYED, wiggled, wondered around on the road, and nearly went in the ditch.

So you see, It does not matter what you tow with. If not done correctly. It will sway. Having a 2500, or 3500 is NO magic elixir. My 30' TT is dead still behind my F150. I would not be in that 3500 with that TT hooked to it. It was too scary

Given a 25mph cross-wind, I'd would prefer being next to a slightly overloaded 1/2-ton/5th combo than one towing a TT near it's limits with a standard WD/friction hitch.

I'd also rather be driving a 1/2-ton/5th combo than a 3/4 ton/TT setup.

What would you rather be behind? a 3500 dually towing a 35 foot 5`er well within it`s limits with a newby behind the wheel? or a 1500 with a 32ft TT that is 500lbs over it`s GVWR with a seasoned driver behind the wheel?

It also can be caused from a poor driving truck. Really shows up if the rv is a TT. Air pressure, poor driver and improper weight distribution and suspension wear. It is important to have good maintenance on any TV. Of course we all know this information is true . Stuff does happen

Didn't read all the responses, but was it a 3500 Dually or 3500 SRW truck...YOU were driving 70mph and he PASSED you....not very safe for the guy towing at 70 mph PLUS!! Wonder if he had ST tires on that TH?

Will agree with you, IF your set up isn't correct, IF you have no clue what your doing while towing, IF you're speeding, all of these are dangerous and not real smart...I will include 1/2 ton trucks in this equation also...it doesn't matter if it's a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, ton SRW or 1 ton Dually, IF set up isn't done correctly, the driver isn't very good at towing, speeding, etc....that doesn't mean a 250/2500 or 3500/350 isn't better, it just means the guy behind the wheel is clueless..

So you think, that if you had been towing that TH behind the 3500, you couldn't have done a better job with the set up or the driving ability? It was only a 28 footer, per you, so why would you not want to try towing that small of a unit with an F350 or 3500? It wouldn't be up to the task for a 3500/350, but a 1/2 ton would:h

Just curious as to your analysis of your 1/2 ton towing a TT to a 3500 towing a small TH.....Would the 3500 been "capable" of towing your TT set up correctly? Sounds to me like the only thing wrong with the 3500 was improper set up and a driver that was clueless and speeding.

Why would someone hate an inanimate object? I've owned a BUNCH of 1/2 ton trucks since 75', Did every job I needed to do, well...As I purchased heavier 5er's, I had to leave the 1/2 ton behind.

Barney,

That last poster was probably trying to make a funny, in the wrong thread at the wrong time.....reality is, this funky has to be a 25/35 series, diesel etc etc God be to restrictive and would never pass federal or state legislatures. As it would also rule out class 8's that move one deck of a lot of stuff to an from places. His statement would never fly!

think I read somewhere that in 2017 1/2 ton trucks would have no towing capacity, so if You would like to tow You must buy a 2500-3500 and it must be a diesel. also new federal regulations removing tow hitches from any 1/2 ton less that 2 years old.
what do You think ?

Sure do need a link for that one! Either that or you were having a bad dream.

My fist new truck had a 292 I6 with whopping 105 hp. A bb v8 at the time did not even have but 200 hp. A v6 pushing out 300 hp should be able to move MANY trailers that some say they could not. I move 5k trailers with the 292. Not fast, but fast enough. Folks today do not see motto wantthe motors to rev so they make the rrated hp. I have no issues having my vortec350 into the 4-5 k range so it can make the 200-255 hp it is rated at. Pulled a 12k trailer from a stop up a 2-3% grade to 45 mph @ 45 mph on 2nd gear. A people geared v6 with equality hp should be able t do the same.

Oh, that 292 was in an 8600 gvw2500 GMC. I can hear the howling on a barely 100 hp motor in a typical 3/4 to. Truck. Much less getting the same motor in 20k v60 series truck.
I hauled lots of wheat from the farm to the elevator with a D-300 with a 225 slant 6 grossing 16K and an "M" model Studebaker grossing almost 20K 50 years ago. Got the job done without breaking them.

I've got nothing against half ton trucks at all and I don't see anything magical about my 3/4 ton. But travelling this summer over the passes in northwestern Montana and northern Idaho my 3/4 ton ran 75-80 mph (save your "OMG OMG TOO FAST TOO FAST" comments, I don't care!) up 4th of July and Mullan passes with 7,500lbs behind it and got 13mpg doing so. While my father-in-laws 1/2 barely managed 60mph and 6mpg with 7,000lbs behind.

That is all the reason I need to keep my 3/4 ton diesel, and that is honest personal experience, not a "magic elixer".

Then there is folks like me, that have employees driving said trucks, daily with 6x12 trailer, full of mowers etc, then the bed gets loaded daily with other junk, like grass clipping, prunings etc. Even then, a pickup bed is too small, a 1 ton or class 4 is many times the better option with a 12' dump bed on it.

As I noted recently, worst than a number of years ago, that trucks are harder to find for contractor style rigs. MOST seem to be car equals, even the 8 lug 25/35 series are carpeted, leather, power this that and the other thing.......I found a few basic 1500's, they wanted as much or more than paid for my 05 LS CC dually dmax I bought in 05! Amazing, $30K for a base 1500 with a V6! One does not find these types of rigs used in any kind of decent shape either......or if you do, they are very few and far between.

Marty

I would really consider a V6 in the truck especially if it's towing a 6x12 trailer with mowing equipment in it. The V6 offerings from all of the big 3 are pushing V8 power from 9 years ago. Look at the Dodge 3.6 at 305HP plus it's getting 17mpg city. 25k msrp - with rebates and dealer discounts you could probably get them for around 22k each.
