Hopefully, everything goes well for you. Before you get here, and while you're here, come back to this forum and let us know where you plan to go and we can give you advice on what to see and where to stay. There are all kinds of campgrounds. Some people like me prefer state and federal campgrounds because they usually have more room and cost less than many private campgrounds. We can also suggest routes which can avoid heavy traffic. This country is huge and there's a lot to see. Hope you enjoy your trip and we'll be glad to help you if we can.

I cannot answer your questions but perhaps I can give you somethings to look at. I assume you are past the bearing and raising years and perhaps even have kids out on their own, if so, talk to them and ask about their friends who have had an OE. For those of you who do not know what OE means, Overseas Experience. We have hosted quite a few kids from NZ during their OEs and they have bought and sold vehicles here and in Canada, it isn't rocket science.

There are networks of younger folk that have or are planning on visiting and buying here. Google and YouTube are your friends for finding help in this and many other ways.

You don't need to pay a fee for this help, Uni's have a lot of kids who can help.

There are folks on this site that are doing what you are thinking of, perhaps some of them will chime in and help. A lot has to do with how you title your enquirers.

We only know one couple living in Oz who have done this and they may be able to help, if you give me an email address in a PM, I'll ask them to respond to you. Several of their extended families have done OEs and purchased vehicles here and sold here.

This should help get you started in the correct direction.

NOTE: A valid license issued by a government agency from a U.S. state or another country is required to drive legally in North Carolina. North Carolina law enforcement authorities do not recognize international driver licenses.

https://www.protectiveagency.com/services/auto-insurance-north-carolina/foreign-license-insurance/

Foreign drivers must have either a licensed issued by the state of North Carolina, or one issued by their home state in the U.S. International driverโ€™s licenses are not honored in North Carolina. So, if someone is only visiting the area and not planning to stay for an extended period, they should look for other forms of transportation during their visit to North Carolina. In most cases, if you have an international driverโ€™s license that is up-to-date, that license is valid for up to one year after the date you entered the U.S.

Check your visit time permits. You may be the same as Canadians & a few other places permited 180 days in a 12 month period, not calendar year, visa free.

No, you cannot get off the plane, catch a taxi to a dealer & drive off in your own RV in a few hours. Not if it is a one time trip. Not if it is multi trips over multiple years. There are a few hoops to jump through.

I want to thank everybody that took the time to reply. Your information is really helpful and inspiring. At this time we are still a couple of years away from retirement age so we are still in the planning stage. We actually plan to purchase something decent and affordable and put it in storage during the winter months That way we can bounce back and forth over the next few years. There is way too much in your country to see in one trip.

You need a US address to register it too. Easiest method is to form an LLC to act as your holding company. There are pros & cons to each state but Montana makes it very easy. No need for a vehicle inspection. Form the company first then do everything in the company name. The one time formation fee is not too bad. The annual fee after that is quite small. I would be wary of involving a third party such as a dealer in anything other than the sale of the unit.

That's way too much trouble for a one time visit and on top of that it doesn't give you any tax saving or real liability protection for how & what they will be doing. If buying for a business, maybe . Maybe if there is an attorney looking at this post they will chime in .

If your not aware all states do not have the same laws. What may be a problem in one state may be fine in another. You will have to check with the state you plan on buying you vehicle.

Friends of ours from OZ have come over to the US a couple of times for extended visits and have bought a car each time. After traveling around the country for several months, they sell it. No need to establish an address in the US.

Actually, your best bet is to establish a USA address using a mail forwarding service. With that address, you can buy, register, and then insure your vehicle. I suggest Dakota Post in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They will guide you through the processes.

Yes. visitors from other nation states can purchase, register, vehicles in the USA. Your Australian drivers license is valid for a visit.. you are welcome, your citizenship in Australia is welcome in all of the Americas, from Canada to Argentina.
Visit consulates and embassies for clearance.
