What does your stuff weigh challenge- post your number

There are some of us out here that are true data dorks. Weight is important, even when our TV is more than enough to pull what is behind us. I sold my TT and had all the stuff sitting in my garage, “self” I thought, what does this stuff really weigh?

After pulling the trusty human scale from out under the couch and testing it (although it may be off by 5 LBS or so) I got busy with Rubbermaid tubs, notepad and calculator. After 14 trips to the scale, here is the data-

The stuff I had in my old camper is around 425 lbs. what outfitted a camper for 5 2A/3K– bedding, sleeping bags, electrical cords, 6 folding chairs, 1 18lbs charcoal, canister, small grill, cleaning supplies, tools, blocks, pot & pans, coloring sheeting and match box cars …..

What was not is included – Food & Drinks, clothes, bikes, fishing tackle, dutch oven, firewood, water, . The last two are not really things we travel with anyways.

Best guestimate by time add food & drinks, 650 to 750 lbs. people not include in this weight.

It all depends on which number that you want to go off of:
- Advertised dry weight: 11,840 lbs.
- Yellow sticker: 12,239 lbs.
- Most recent weighing: 14,820 lbs.

So, I'm about 3,000 pounds over dry weight and 2,581 pounds over yellow sticker.

HOWEVER- that includes things like our dealer-installed slide toppers as well as water in the fresh water tank.

Yellow sticker says 9470lb. Scale said 10960lb. Of course the loaded weight will change some depending on what we pack, the day I weighed I know we were somewhat light.

Here are my latest per cat scales

Truck unloaded fuel full and driver --
Steer axle: 4860lb
Drive axle: 3680lb
Gross weight: 8540lb

Truck Loaded w/5th wheel loaded out and all tanks full --
Steer axle: 5160lb
Drive axle: 7100lb
Trailer axle(s): 11700lb
Gross weight: 23960lb

Regarding the yellow sticker inside the fifth wheel or TT.
My 2011 cougar sab27 xlite sticker states 6920 . I weighed combos a lot as I towed this fifth with a max tow f150 and was weary.
Scaled was 6922.............. With 2 full propane, battery, ac, awning etc.
Guess it depends on the manufacturer as to how accurate true weight is.
I ran down the road at 8000 and found that towing in Alberta and BC with a family of 4 I was too close on weights ( not tow rating) and jumped to f350.
Now I am closer to 8500 for fifth wheel weights. It does add up and the kids get bigger!

We are about to pick up a new rv next week and I'll run straight to the cat scales to find out where we stand before I put one thing in it !!!!


Too much work to weigh each thing that goes in, but once loaded up I can see what the diff is !!!

Last weigh slip showed 8500 lbs, or 1600 lbs over the 6900 lb dry weight. That was with 1/2 fresh water, holding tanks empty, and packed for a 2 week trip.

The last time I weighed mine I had 356# of gear. Not water, people, etc., just gear. But I pull a small TT and I think my old backpacking and tenting practices of not carrying excess stuff of questionable value is still strong even after all these years.

I'm recalling kusani came in at 1200 or so, but his initial guess was around 700-800. He was VERY surprised at the initial total! I swagged 1200-1500 initial IIRC. I do recall that post also. For most of us, we probably put in more than we think!

My old TT was 2000-2200 over the base wt in general, sometimes as much as 3000. One time coming home from skiing I had 8-9K on the trailer axels, usualy in the mid 6K range. That was with about a 1/3 of the snow blown off. My truck was 2K or so over its normal wt also. Total was just over 20-21K, usually 15K plus minus 500 depending upon how loaded etc. That was quite the eye opening. The biggest was when we got home, did not know of all the damage here in seattle over the three days we could not come down from the top of I90 snoqualmie pass because of avalanche issues. 5-6' of snow over 2days, and the area was NOT open! dang it!

It is my understanding that the yellow sticker is the true weight of that specific trailer when it rolls off the assy line. This does not include any kind of dealer added options (propane, batteries, etc).

JC - this brings up another point I wanted to post - is the yellow sticker really true weight of the rig of just another "dry weight" BS weight light yesteryears..... my old rig was 3200 lbs but came in at 4600 lbs.. but I only took out 600 lbs of stuff. this mean the dry weight was off by 25%?????? False advertising?

Yellow sticker says UVW 9470, scale said 10960. That means we have 1490 pounds or there abouts of stuff. I was really surprised it wasn't more. This includes some water and the 2nd AC.

I am ~1,400lbs over the dry weight of my rig. This is all of the stuff I've put in it, plus propane and batteries. I didn't have anything int he tank when I weighed it.

The moderator of the Lifestyles forum, Kusani, quite a few years ago weighed every single thing that he put in his brand new trailer. He was just a weekend camper like most of us and there were just he and his wife - no dogs, cats, or kids. What he found was quite eye-opening!

He loaded right about 1500lbs of stuff if my memory is correct!:E That did not include the weight of propane, water, fuel etc. as far as I remember.

You might want to go to the RV Lifestyle forum and give him a shout. I am sure he remembers that exercise and can verify or correct any of my statements.:)
