What was the biggest flub on a trip?

We always set our items we're loading next to the RV door. On a Thanksgiving trip some years ago, for some inexplicable reason the cooler with the turkey and other refrigerator foods was set on the front stoop. About 150 miles down the road our neighbor called and said, "Did you forget something?"

He got a free turkey and food and we had to rustle Thanksgiving dinner from whatever we could find at a convenience store because all the grocery stores were closed. We did concoct a sausage and egg casserole that year that's become a regular menu item.

There's always a silver lining.

We pride ourselves for having and using very complete checklists for moving and setting up. Once we were leaving and some friends were waving and smiling. The smiles suddenly changed to frantic waving and frowns. We kept going and heard a bad sound from the rear of the motorhome. We stopped and looked at the rear ladder that was now gone.

DW had put a choseline between the ladder and a nearby tree. I was so focused on looking at the tires on the final walk around that I never looked up and walked under the clothesline and never saw it!

Our final walk around checklist now has firm instructions to look UP as well as down.

The first summer I had my present fifth wheel, I did the forget the RV key trick. 2 hours home and 2 hours back. I had yet to put the spare set in the truck like I had done previously. It was midnight before I could relax with a whiskey that night.

Forgot to look down while stepping off the dually after releasing the king pin and blew out my left ankle. Five minutes at campsite, four hours at emergency room and eight weeks in a boot. That trip sucked.

Didn't happen to me but a great story;

Family arrived at a campground with their popup camper. After setting up camp the keys were nowhere to be found. They spent the entire weekend looking. On Sunday morning they were packing up and had a family member on the way with a spare set of keys. They found the keys on the roof.

Oh man that feeling when your wallet is not where it is supposed to be, like a punch in the gut. I have not done it on a trip, but have done it.

I just remembered another one. We had disembarked the ferry at Port Townsend WA, my wallet was MIA. I panicked, figured I had dropped it at the Coupeville terminal but how to get it back? We got out to walk around and assess our options and lo and behold there it was, my wife had been sitting on it! Of course I got flak for leaving it on the seat. We would have seen it on the ferry but couldn't open the doors to get out.

Did the same thing but a bit farther, like 500 miles. I was very careful on that trip and sponged from my wife's purse.

We lived in Manteca, CA. Took the Pop-up to Calistoga for some races. Forgot to pack pillows. Drove home and back to Calistoga. Passing who knows how many WalMarts on the way.

:B DutchmenSport we did that. I wasn't happy with the navigator but we laughed about it afterwards. I pulled out of a cg one morning and dropped the trailer wheels into a hole (so I thought) and didn't get out to check. Went to set up that afternoon and guess what, no landing gear blocks. :S

Without detailed checklists Iโ€™d be driving back all the time. Bicycle front wheel is the most recent.

Got all ready, loaded and took off. Reached the state park and no reservation. We were at the wrong state park. We finally figured out where we were scheduled with the reservation. Showed up about 4 hours later at the right place. Duh!

We normally pull the 5th wheel to our destination for the weekend. We decided to leave it at a campsite for 3 consecutive weekends. The owners only charged us $2 a day to keep it plugged in and on the site. It was cheaper to leave it there than to tow it an hour each way with the truck. And the bonus was we could ride the motorcycle up for the second weekend. And that was where we went wrong. The keys to unlock the camper door are attached to the trucks key chain. And they were still at the houses.
