Would You "Downgrade" To A Tent?

Myself, like I'm sure many others here grew up tent camping. We did it about every year from about 1985-1993. It was our parents and 3 kids, myself included.

In September of 2011 our parents bought a hybrid camper and I bought a tent which I used about 3 times last summer. My parents ended up upgrading to a much larger TT and my brother also dove in to get a bunkhouse TT. I really don't intend to use my tent anymore since my parents basically give me free reign to use their TT when I want.

Anyway, 90% of the time we camp at a local beach CG with full hookups and great views of the ocean. Whenever we have to exit the campground we have to drive past the tent section with no views and only a water hookup. We always think to ourselves that we will never be tent campers again. This is especially true on a hot, sticky night or when it's raining.

I hope it doesn't seem that I'm putting tenters down, but I just know that more then likely I won't be one again. So, does anyone that has an RV still tent it or has anyone "downgraded" to a tent?

When I travel alone, sometimes I upgrade to a tent instead of downgrading myself to a filthy motel room.

I think if we had to give up the camper we would try those cabins you see at most cg's I've done the tent thing and it was fun but between the heat and the always chance of rain I'll pass on the tent.

I loved tent camping when I was a kid. When parents got a big enough TT for all of us I'd still 'camp on my own' in my pup tent. But today I'll readily give up camping before I go back to tent camping. 38 years in the Army cured me of that. Not all of it under the stars of course. Those of you who have been there know quite well. Also, getting older, I've got more than enough cricks, creeks, cracks and groans getting up out of a regular bed every morning.

Years ago I backpacked. There are places we went in the Sierras, that are a 2 day walk from the nearest road. When my boys get big enough, and if they are interested... Ugh.. no running hot water.....

We use a tent when canoe camping. Also thinking about bringing it out to Yellowstone this fall so we don't have to make it back to the CG. Would like the freedom to range as far as we wish.

When I am with the family it is a beautiful 35 foot TT, wife had never tented. When with the scouts it is a tent.

My son is in Boy Scouts like I was when I was his age. They don't let you take the RV on a Scout hike. I don't mind tent camping, especially when you back pack to some spectacular sites.
Having said that, I prefer to take my small camper to remote RV spots to boondock instead of my large 34' trailer.

Thats what we did.. due to finances.

My entire camping set up including bikes fits on our small utility trailer. We may be splurging and getting a couple 4 Man Eureka Timberline tents. One for DW and I and the other for the boys.

Our new "RV" is easily towed with our 4 cyl Kia Sorento

Thanks!

Agreed. I don't consider it a downgrade- just a different kind of camping.

a tent in my future. NO NOPE NO WAY

I loved my tenting time, but never going back to it. older I get there are things I want point blank. ac/full kitchen/my big old bed ๐Ÿ™‚

I can take day hikes and enjoy all the experiences (mostly) and come back to my luxury on wheels.

I would be Ok in a tent with certain comforts to make it tolerable.
Also it would have to be DW's suggestion and that will never happen.
