Big Blunder, any suggestions?

Not sure if this is in the correct spot and if not just let me know. The DW made a blunder and I wanted to know if anyone else has done this and is there any suggestions as to what to do if anything. Not thinking she laid a hot skillet lid in the sink (which is plastic of course) and it melted a place in the sink. Now it didn't go all the way through but it concerns me. What if anything should I do to repair this or is it repairable? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Replacing is easy.

On the other hand - the "scar" makes for a great story (says the lady with the perfectly-burned shape of a clothes iron in her carpet - in a spot where it can't easily be patched)

Ohhhh...my soon to be not DIL was visiting you? My floor are parquets and and I missed the memo that ironing on the floor was the new thing...

Another vote for a s/s sink.

Here are a few different ideas for you. You decide which one fits your situation best.

Tell her the plastic sink is no longer usable. Even though it is not melted thru, the melted area is too brittle now. And it is likely that adding more hot water will "break thru" the damaged area. You don't want to have her to be cleaning up the water in the cabinets. So from now on she will need to take the dishes down to the river to wash them. A month or so of that and she'll not be making that mistake again.

Of course she may insist that you take her out for restaurant meals...Breakfast...lunch...and dinner. To which, just make sure she pays the tab, with tip. A month or so of that and she'll not be making that mistake again.

Just be ready when you make a mistake. She may find a way to get even.

Or you could replace the sink with new Stainless Steel job. And tell her you are so happy that the old plastic sink is destroyed, so you can finally have an excuse to replace it with a good new sink. If you do this she'll like you much better. And when she makes the same mistake again, it won't cause any damage. Nor will it when you make that same mistake.

If it's an acrylic sink it is repairable but would probably be more costly and more work than just putting in a new one. That will give you the opportunity to make it larger if there is room and upgrade to a durable stainless steel one.

They make a series of inserts for the sink, some are flower designs some just plain pads with suction cups that are removable. I would would go for the flower design and bond them in place. It would also protect the sink if it happens again.

I replaced my cheap, plastic, undersized double bowl sink with a nice, deep, large stainless steel sink. It looks great and makes a huge difference.

If you don't want to replace the sink. Go to any Ace hardware and look for JB Weld products. Buy the water weld one.

They make one intended to be used in and around water. You can even apply this stuff under water!

I bought it to repair around the shower drain in the RV and for a water fountain. Stuff is so easy to use and works GREAT can't say enough about this product. You can grind, sand and paint it after dry.

I appreciate all your suggestions. While at this time it is strictly cosmetic I believe I will check into replacing it. It isn't something that I have to drop everything and go right out and replace it but it is something I need to do sometime very soon. Thanks again all.

Can you see the underside of the sink to see if it looks damaged? If it looks melted from the bottom and is sagging then I would be worried that it might start leaking.

If the appearance bothers you or DW, replace it. Stainless steel is the only way to go. The extra cost is well worth it in the long run.

So far the only blunder I envision is blaming your wife for putting the hot pan in the sink. Obviously, if you were being more help the situation would never have happened. My suggestion is to make it clear that the poor quality sink provided by the manufacturer is the primary issue. Replace the sink with one of "better quality" and make it clear that you are sorry for not being on hand to catch the situation before it occurred. Perhaps even show her the note you will be posting complaining of the quality of sink in the rig.

And it will always remind her to not put a hot pan or lid in the sink. Of course if you replace it,,you might get lots of hugs and thank yous, which might be better.
