FDA is asking "US"-dog owners, on national TV tonight"....

Why approx 600 dogs have died and around 3,000 have become ill after
eating jerky treats from China made of chicken, duck, sweet potato.???? :S:S

Isn't that THEIR job? 😞

Perhaps you missed the part where the FDA ruled out dog food as the source since the only commonality in what the sick dogs ate was the treats and not the dog food (or ingredients in the myriad of dog food consumed by all the sick dogs). Or do you believe the people who work at the FDA are too stupid to even determine this? If you are smarter than those that work at the FDA why not apply to work for the FDA and show them how it should be done?

FDA: Why Are Jerky Treats Making Pets Sick?

More than 1,200 jerky pet treat samples have been tested since 2011 for a variety of chemical and microbiological contaminants, from antibiotics to metals, pesticides and Salmonella. DNA testing has also been conducted, along with tests for nutritional composition.

In addition to continuing to test jerky pet treat samples within FDA labs, the agency is working with the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), an FDA-coordinated network of government and veterinary diagnostic laboratories across the U.S. and Canada. Vet-LIRN became actively involved in pet jerky treats investigation at the end of 2011. We obtain medical histories of pets that have been seen by a veterinarian, and based on the case profile, we plan and organize testing of treats collected from the consumer. Testing is performed by FDA laboratories and other animal health diagnostic laboratories in our network. Vet-LIRN also coordinates collection and testing of diagnostic material and tissues from affected animals.

Inspections of the facilities in China that manufacture jerky products associated with some of the highest numbers of pet illness reports did not identify the cause of illness. However, they did identify additional paths of investigation, such as the supply chain of some ingredients in the treats. Although FDA inspectors have found no evidence identifying the cause of the spate of illnesses, they did find that one firm used falsified receiving documents for glycerin, a jerky ingredient. Chinese authorities informed FDA that they had seized products at the firm and suspended its exports.

To identify the root cause of this problem, FDA is meeting regularly with regulators in China to share findings. The agency also plans to host Chinese scientists at its veterinary research facility to increase scientific cooperation.

FDA has also reached out to U.S. pet food firms seeking further collaboration on scientific issues and data sharing, and has contracted with diagnostic labs.

"Our fervent hope as animal lovers," says Dunham, "is that we will soon find the cause of—and put a stop to—these illnesses."

CA POPPY your post reminds me of the major medical manufacturer who imported medical equipment from China and recrated them in BIG crates that said MADE IN THE USA. Just the crates were made in USA. GEe

The blame should be squarely on the multi national companies who are buying from China without any oversight by the importers.

Imagine if tomorrow, we all woke up, looked around our homes and everything "made in China" was missing. No computer, no TV, no phones. Your favorite athletic shoes might be gone. The list goes on and on. We'd all be pretty upset but I'll tell you what, I draw the line at food, whether for human consumption or for pets. 20 years ago there were public warnings that pet jerky made in China was colored with the dye they use in saddles. Sounds logical. Make something look appealing and the Western market will buy it. No, not me. And the companies are getting so tricky. I looked over some dog treats that had a USA flag printed on them. Read the fine print and guess what? Made in China for US retailers. We don't need to buy them, we can make our own with a little effort. We all have choices.

Hmmm. Chicken. China. Bird flu. Antibiotics. Anyone see where I'm going? Can't sell them to humans, load them up with antibiotics, make dog food out of them. By the time testing is done, virus could be dormant and doesn't show up. I'm probably grasping at straws but just a thought.

When I was young, in the 50's, my momma taught my not to buy anything made in Japan, or China, it was junk. Almost everyday we see some product with a problem that was made in China.

Looks like that is what we need to return to, no matter how hard it will be to find and buy American.

I think it would be best to just stop buying any kind of pet food that's made in China. They've made it clear they don't care about our pets.

Some people just hate the fact that China is doing well. Finally, they were thrown some crumbs, made something out of it and it just hacks people off.

When a U.S. manufacturer makes a mistake, I don't hear people wanting to take them to the guillotine.

No doubt there is a problem but don't crucify the whole Republic of China for the problem.

The histrionics is in the statement by you " isn't that their job" as if they are not doing their job.

the article states; "“To date, testing for contaminants in jerky treats has not revealed a cause for the illnesses,” So you see testing was done on the suspected product and no cause found but you led people to believe the FDA was not doing their job. That is one of the definitions of histrionics.

Think of how long before mad cow disease was finally found or bird flu sometimes these things are hard to trace so stop the histrionics please as if people are not doing there job
