Radio control planes/copters/quadcopters

Hi all,

Just wondering how many Rv'ers out there fly radio control planes, heli's or quads? I'm heavy into quads flying with my Gopro camera.

Would like to hear about some of the places ppl have flown, some of their experiences, and see some of the pics taken, if any.

Just wondering....

Enjoy the Journey....

FUTUBA and a few others are out there, but by far the most popular is Spektrum. They have made improvements on the modulation the 1st was DSM, then DSM2, now DSMX. Hanging out flags and frequency jamming is long gone. These days you can fly several hundred models in the same space, but being in the 2.4GhZ spectrum has brought some very occasional packet losses from WiFi, or some other control or data service co-channeled. DSMX is a true spread spectrum frequency hopper, which further reduces the problem.

I've been on a break from RC planes since I got more into photography. For 15 years though it was 3 times a week at the fields and the rest of the time building. In the end I spent more time instructing than flying my planes, it burns you out.

Aside from some little electrics, the only things I have flyable are a trainer and a Shoestring. On the tables I have a quarter scale pitts and a 10 ft cub. Waiting is tri plane, stearman, a gee bee and another 10 ft that I had intended to use as a tow for gliders. The big birds all have Sato 150 or 180 4 strokes except the big Pitts. It gets a Sato 300 twin.

On the extreme side I have a Diamond dust delta wing with a piped Super Tigre 46 that will do close to 200 mph and several fun flies that are ridiculously maneuverable.

I have taken them camping in the past but the extreme altitude provides less lift as well as less oxygen to the motors. The trail we come in on are the only strips and they are rough with rocks, wash boards, etc. All in all, not a good combo.

Btw, what is the standard for radios now? All of mine had gold stickers.

For small and cheap look at Harbor Freight.

Their Yellow Bee is on sale for $32.99 and includes everything you need except batteries for the controller. Serious enthusiasts will want to look elsewhere but for those who just want to have a little cheap fun these are great. I've had three or so over the past 6 years (have to replace them once they get too beat up to repair anymore) and have had loads of fun with them. I've found that some plastic shipping tape comes in handy to reinforce the wings before (or after) the inevitable crashes.

The very good 2 camera, Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is on clearance sale at Bed Bath & Beyond for $179 plus an additional 20% off. Best to ask for help from store manager. Get it for $143. Best buy in the world!!! This sales on E-Bay for up to $350.:B

Theres a reason for that sale and savings. Be careful of buying quads and planes from other than reputable dealers who will provide instructions and replacement parts.
I see so many helicopters sold in malls and fleamarkets and the poor guy is waiting the next morning for a part because he crashed it and the seller just shrugs the shoulders and says...get on the internet.
Harbor Freight? Their planes are nearly as good as their tools. You will be disappointed.
And that is exactly what discourages the masses from the hobby. Besides, IMO those don't even qualify as helicopters since the only control is a tiny prop that controls 'pitch'. There is no roll or yaw I've ever seen on the cheepies.

If that Parrot is the one I'm thinking of, it's controlled via WiFi that gives extremely limited range. There is a YouTube out there about a Parrot that flew out of range and it was found hours later in a parking lot, actually NOT flattened.

Hershey, take a good look at the screw in mount at the back of the motor where it connects to the X mount on your Visionare. Mine, almost brand new, unscrewed and the motor hung by the wires and pretty much totaled the plane.
My original motor lasted about 2 doz flights and the bearings started making a lot of noise. Contacted HH and they sent me a new motor, no charge. Since then Its been very smooth. I went to a 11x5.5 prop and increased speed and performance by a large margin. Thanks for the advice, I'll keep an eye on it.
