2014 RAM 2500 6.4 burning through tires

Hi all.
Want to get some opinions on this.
My 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 6.4 burned through the stock tires at 38,000kms (23,612mi).
I got pretty much from everyone that my driving was the culprit. For the record,
I drive like a grandma and even my wife gets annoyed by that.
I purchased (on reccomendation of the tire shop) Goodyear Duratrac tires.
9,000kms(5592mi) in on them, and the front wheels outer tread is ROUNDED. Like REALLY rounded. The engine side of both tires is fine.
I take the truck to the dealership and they suggest I need an alignment. Which I would like
to trust them until the guy said "Oh these 6.4 are famous for doing that to front tires".
So just like that, all credibility out the window. But I thought I would check here.

Is it possible that out of the cummins, the 5.7 and the 6.4 that only the 6.4 wrecks tires?

Any other suggestions would be great!

Rotate every 5,000 miles and alignment. Bighatnohorse is spot on w/ caster/camber. But if your having wear issues, then you have a problem. A semi at my workplace has outside edge of rt steer tire darn near down to wearbars. Rest of tire looks okay as does the left tire. Let go of steering wheel at hiway speed and it's what I call "instant death" as truck IMMEDIATELY swerves to the right. Not my assigned truck, but have driven it before, wrote up as well before, yet nothing done. Other driver's don't even bother to write up as they don't write anything up anyways or have a clue--just get in and go.

Bought our DD a '11 Chevy Cruze in summer of '13 w/ about 23k miles and all 4 tires were down to wearbars. Dealer was going to sell it to her that way! Told dealer "NO Stinkin' way am I buying it w/ those tires". I wanted them to switch them w/ ones from her car that died, but they wouldn't due to different size (they could've, but claimed this reason and that etc). Then dealer offered to replace just 2 tires. Again told them no way, "All 4 or no deal". They "found" another car w/ 9k miles on tires and put them on. Now the funny part is, my local tire gurus were able to use the snow tires from dead car on the Cruze despite diff size. Really think dealer knew that the summer tires on dead car were quite beefy and able to make a buck off them. So, tires get switch from season to season, and now she need new summers. Going w/ Continentals. As far as I know her alignment is good and no unusual wear.

We had Goodyear Duratracs on our F250 diesel (6.4). They lasted at least 50K miles (we sold it at 98K miles and that was our second set of tires, put on at around 48K miles). We towed 70 percent of those miles and the tires were in excellent shape when we sold it. When we purchased, we got the lifetime free rotation and rotated at every 3,000 miles or so.

Both the camber and tow-in are probably off and will eat the outer edges off pretty quickly.
Tow-in is like pigeon toes - front tires pointed toward each other too much.

I have an 08 2500 MegaCab with the 5.7. I changed the original BFGoodrich AT's at about 95000kms or 55k miles. Had no rounding at all, just no bite left in the snow. I kept the fronts at 60psi, rears at 70 when towing my fifth and about 45psi when empty (As per the door sticker). Have a set of Nitta Dura Grapplers on now with about 15k miles, still look new. I have yet to take it in for an alignment

So why are you over inflating you tires. My 15 3500 Laramie diesel 4x4 only calls for 60 in front tires at full rated load. What does your door jam sticker say? With the lighter rear axle rating I doubt it calls for 80 lbs.

Over inflation decreases traction, decreases braking and leads to impact damage.

You're right, just checked the door sticker. Didn't realize that the front and rears were different. They were all 80 when I got it and my dealer always airs them to 80. I tried lowering them all once to improve the ride but the TPMS would set off at anything less than 65psi so I put them back to 80. Haven't noticed any negative effects other than the rougher ride. Going to drop just the fronts back to 60psi and see what happens.

Even the cheap Continental 17" tires that came with my Ford lasted over 30K miles (almost three years), so you definitely have an alignment issue. The toe adjustment that was referenced should help with the shoulder wear (I assume you are running the correct pressure in your tires).

From the Goodyear tire site:

"Rotating your tires every 3,000 – 6,000 miles will help eliminate premature tire wear and could save you hundreds of dollars."

I don't see 10K recommended anywhere.

I've got 55k kms on my stock tires so far, around 6k of that towing. They are evenly worn with lots of tread left. I keep them aired to 80psi all the time. I only have the 5.7 though.

I would concur with a few others and say that your alignment is likely your culprit.

I have a 2014 2500 4x4 with the 5.7. The original tires lasted 17k miles. The alignment on this truck seems to be my issue. I had it aligned at 13k as the front left tire was wearing funny. I purchased new tires at 17k and had it realigned again as it started pulling right. At 31k I had it realigned at the dealer when it was in for in of the recalls. 40k it needs alignment again. Kind of a pain considering I don't do any off-roading.

RAM calls for 1/4" toe in on the diesels, and people have a good alignment shop decrease that to 1/32" Toe in is most likely causing the rounded outer edges. General wear is standard fair with the Firestone Transforce AT. HT is not much better. I have 12K on our new RAM and tires are doing fair.

Just hit 30000 mi on my Outdoorsman and notice the OE Goodyear Wrangler Pro's looking pretty worn. It's funny since they're 10 ply tires on a 1/2 ton grocery getter, they're not even working close to what their load rating is.

I'll get new tires with the new truck in a few months 🙂
