2015 RAM 3500 VS 2015 GM 3500?

Good morning fellas, ladies! hope everyone is well. While this isn't a "which should I buy" thread I thought it would be an interesting thread to start to get opinions from both sides.

my story.... My wife and I factory ordered a 2015 GMC sierra Denali dually back in the summer of 2014, we drove it for a year and loved it, I deleted it and the mileage sky rocketed. towed amazing, and gave us great reliability.

Fast forward to august 2015 after we get back home from the lake, a close family friend brings over his new 2015 RAM limited cummins, ive always been a fan of the cummins engine but didn't think a whole lot of dodge/ram interiors MOSTLY because I hadn't been in one since the old body style and interior. Needless to say I was blown away by the limited interior and all the options and creature comforts that the limited had versus my denali. I have always said I never did buy my GMC's for their interiors rather the duramax/Allison combo, while I believe GM did pick up there game in the 2015s I still feel they lack some very common sense ammenties that should come standard on a
80,000$ truck.

Long story short, my wife and I decide to go check out a 2015 RAM cummins the following week, wife never usually says anything about our trucks just "as long as itll pull our camper/boat to the lake" Ive never seen her so excited about a truck. Anyway as of October 2015 we've been driving a 2015 RAM 3500 dually limited with aisin transmission. Being a GM guy all my life and having owned 5 duramax's I can honestly say I am extremely pleased with my switch to RAM, performance wise I am sure the trucks will be on par stock for stock. However I feel RAM has taken a very bold step forward in providing what I refer to as a "luxury" interior with amenities that I feel should also be standard on my denalis ive owned. I must also confirm that I still LOVE my duramax trucks ive had flawless KM on every single one ive owned. I think we switched this time just strictly on an interior basis. I also love the fact that its completely "turn key" tow ready from factory, just set your fifth wheel hitch in the bed and go, HOWEVER these puck style hitches are **** expensive.


So I guess my purpose of this thread, is not to start an argument of what truck is better. Rather to see who may have made a switch either way, your opinions, your likes/dislikes, and how you feel one tows over the other? I personally have yet to tow with my RAM... camping season is incredibly close for us and I have a severe itch to hook up and pull with this thing to get a compairison.

I know the drivetrain did not suffer towing 28-29K with over half of the 65K towing with 3.42's and 68RFE. The gears in pic below sure would not have looked near new if there were stress towing that weight with the wrong gears. Trans fluid had at least 50K.

The Aisin gives you lower starting gears that is why I recommend it with 3,42's towing up to 27K or so combined.

As far as mileage the my 11HO RAM's towing and solo mileage with 3.42's was similar to my 15 with 4.10's. But a new truck the same as mine with 3.42's will get better solo mileage and the same towing.

This post is spot on. I have 342s in my 2016 in sig and it pulls v strong, I've towed at 24k GCWR across three states and on job sites have gotten trailer with a small-medium 'dozer on it moving with no issue.

My fuel mileage stays right around 17-18 MPG in our everyday driving. What does your 4.10's do?:@

Well, my truck has the G56 stick so definitely not an absolute exact comparison but I will say that I am VERY happy with the 3.73 gears with the dually. The SRW trucks have larger tires than the dually and only 3.42 gears available. This will make for a great truck solo and towing moderate weights but it certainly will suffer with heavier weights. I love staying in 6th gear towing 16k lbs on moderate grades, and my truck is a pretty good solo unit too.

JMHO but the 3.73 gears are a great compromise of good solo driving and towing "mid" size weights. I think Ram should definitely offer them in the SRW trucks. There is definitely a reason why that is the main (maybe only) gears offered.

We've finally downsized to a single truck which hasn't been the case for large parts of my life. I've owned more chevys than anything else, most of those highly modified. Only 2 fords, and two internationals (49 pickup as restoration project and a scout). I've also owned an assortment of jeeps, all single purpose modified and like the internationals not purchased new. Since 2000 I've purchased 3 rams and 1 chevy as new purchases, so I suppose that would indicate in the later model vehicles I prefer the Rams.

Overall my chevys have been quieter with less squeaks and rattles, had smoother engines, and noticeably better suspensions and braking performance, especially when running unloaded. While the cummins engines are rougher and not quite as overall powerful as the newer Chevys, I prefer the way the cummins pull other than the stupid torque management issues with my 2015 in low gear. My current Ram brakes are pretty good if you mash the pedal and hold on, but not as refined when you're on snow, ice, or dirt roads possibly pushing the vehicle performance a litte. The front to rear proportioning balance could be better as well as the rate of engagement.

As mentioned, both my 2011 and 2015 rams have sweet instrumentation and I like the nav system interface. The radar overlay is great when you're towing in winter conditions where warnings keep popping up on the nav display of road closures, and you're trying to pick the best option to keep moving. On the down side the maps are way out of date, and for some reason just awful in a lot of areas. I keep a portable Garmin in my truck for when the in dash unit gets lost, which it has done a lot more often than you would think given how long GPS mapping has been available. I've also learned never to trust the Nav system when it re-routes for weather related conditions. Seems it simply picks a road it thinks is good because road conditions aren't reported on that road, but more often than not you find that road is worse if anything.

My 2015 cummins/Asin combo is one of the worst trucks I've owned for transmission hunting, surprisingly much worse than my 2011 Ram 2500 CTD. Being a SRW with somewhat tall gearing I always lock out sixth gear or it hunts continually while towing. I lock out 5th as well if it's very windy or hilly, and I sometimes have to lock it in 3rd in some of the mountain areas when it keeps doing the 3rd to 4th, lug, back to 3rd thing. My other tow haul equipped vehicles have done better at automatically selecting an appropriate gear. That said, on the downhill run the new auto engine brake system seems to be dialed in very well and just does exactly what you expect it to do.

The Ram seats are very comfortable for both the wife and me and we love the heat/cooling options. We find they are good even for 16 plus hour days. The rear seat heaters are okay I suppose, but we rarely have anyone but the dogs back there. The heated steering wheel is Oh so Sweet in the winter. I really like the factory fifth wheel/gooseneck puck setup, and the rear air suspension is much nicer than any aftermarket rear suspension load handling system I've every had.

While it seems there are still a lot of compromises to be made when selecting a truck they have improved to the point where for me they are pretty much acceptable for use without having to do a lot of mods.

I just made the reverse move from a 06 RAM 2500 CTD to a 2015 3500 Silverado D/A. I know the difference in nine years makes the comparison skewed, but if the Ram would have been a better built vehicle I would have considered a new Ram. The Cummins engine was great, but the rest of the vehicle not so much.

The other big factor for me was the looks of the new Rams. I was never wild about the looks of the 06, but it was OK. I really don't care for the looks of the new ones. I even like the looks of the Ford HD trucks better than Ram although they are getting dated. To each his own.

Punching the tow haul button cuts out the low 60's MPH hunting. Seem to only happen between 60-65. Towing with tow haul keeps it in 5 while towing and only goes down to 4th on a 6 percent pull.

Unlike the 68RFE the Aisin is not an adaptive tranny, as it has it's own separate computer.

The ONLY gearing offered in a Ram 3500 SRW truck, foursome stupid reason is the 3.42..The Ram 3500 dually offers 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10...Mine has the Aisin and 4.10..towing 5er I traded in for TH, the HR CAT scale weight was 16,300#..wasn't no hunting with that set up, more than enough power...and that's towing in the mountains.

Are you sure you can't get 3.73 on the 3500 srw's? I have 3.73 on my DRW Megacab.
The one thing GM needs to do is offer a larger crew cab option. I had the 4 door 2500 HD but it's not as comfortable in the rear as the Ford and especially the megacab with a family traveling or your buddy's on a hunting trip.

I understand I could lock out 6th and stop the hunting. My point in comparing the two is that I don't need to with the Ally. It's perfectly comfortable towing in 6th and rarely drops in to 5th. 3.73 gears with the Aisin would likely produce comparable results, but Ram only offers 3.42 with SRW trucks

I'll agree, heated rear seats in the denali would be nice, DD says so.!! And, the rear definitely could use more air ducting for the heat/AC.

On the plus side I like the ride and stability of the GMC better than ford or dodge, but that's personal preference. And we put lots of highway miles on/year, 18K and it isn't even a year old.

I have mixed feelings on the folding rear seats. I liked the 04 with the flat folding, but it kept the seats from sliding all the way back and reclining. The fold up on the 15 lets one do that easily, but with a underseat storage compartment you don't end up with a flat area. There are times I wish it was designed to fold EITHER way.

But I do like the onstar/4G wifi. Wifi and phone have come in handy when we can't get verizon (CDMA) reception but do have ATT (GSM). nice to have access to BOTH systems.

All in all, IMHO All 3 are great trucks, pick what YOU like and you'll likely be happy.

GM is missing a few amenities. The navigation doesn't update its location when searching for gas stations while driving. It just gets further from the listed stations unless I refresh the screen. DW 2012 Jeep does this automatically.

Her Jeep also has both front windows that are auto up and down while my 2015 Silverado only does the driver side. The Jeep also has keyless enter N go.

I also miss the rear AC vents in the new truck. My old 2005 GMC had them as standard equipment.

While these are minor details they were available four years ago on a vehicle that cost 20k less than my truck. GM does need to correct the minor details or I will buy a Ram next time. When you spend this kind of money it's the little stuff that makes a big difference in a decision to purchase.
