Andy Granetelli's turbine car that was the class of the 1967 Indy 500 field until it suffered a bearing failure late in the race?

I wished that engine was available to other brands of trucks such as Toyota. The Nissan has never caught my eye and frankly its not a truck that I would buy. However it would be nice in a Tundra. Or if GM got going on the rumored 4.5 duramax for the 1/2 tons that would fit the bill for a lot of RV 1/2 ton owners. Regardless I can see a lot of sales for Nissan due to the engine alone, good move on there part.

Rumours are that Toyota will have it for the Tundra

Man, great read!!! I had no idea. Too bad they didn't screen the turbo. It would have been a different story if they did.

4K RPM for a diesel in 1952!!! :E A mag case!!!! WOW!!! Now that's wild! Cummins really pulled that one off!

That was the best read I had in a long time.

๐Ÿ™‚ Hi, interesting article, But even the Diesel fans can't get their fuels correct.

Wow, the crew cab 4WD looks to be about 1590 lbs payload, same as my F150. Yet that truck is heavier than a F250 Crew Cab 4WD 6.2L Gasser, with over 1,000 lbs less GVWR.

Better off with a F150 Ecoboost since they both share turbos. The lighter 2011 - 2014 F150 has the exact same torque to weight ratio from the F150's significantly lower weight, but the Eco's max torque comes on a bit later with 2500 rpms.

With the Eco's higher 365 hp and 1630 lbs lower weight, you'll have a lot more working horses. Using the same horsepower to weight ratio that the new Titan XD has, would put a very low 242 hp into the lighter F150.

With the Titan XD horsepower to weight ratio and torque to weight ratio, that would equate to the same configured 2011 - 2014 F150 having 429 lbs of torque and 242 horsepower. The Ecoboost F150 has 365 hp and 420 lbs of torque.

Titan XD @ 7400 lbs UVW and 2011 - 2014 F150 Ecoboost @ 5770 lbs UVW.

Looks like another DUD. Had the 2004 Titan and was a POS. Had a 2005 Pathfinder, and not much better. Under performing garage queens.

Me too, although I doubt this will be a similar deal compared to diesel 3/4 tons where the payload rating is a farce given the that there's nothing significant regulatory related with an 8800 lb GVWR.

Me too. But as it's not a full float axle and the wheels are only 6 lug, my guess is that the the diff between rear axle curb/base weight and rear GAWR will be as disappointing as the payload.

The rest of the drive train (differential, aisin tranny) seems really stout, but seems that's only to handle the diesel torque, not payload.

I sure shot high on my GVWR guess. They definitely appear to be targeting more of a beefy half ton than a light heavy duty.

But maybe that's not all bad - 1700 lbs is a lot better than a sub 1000 lb payload rating on an EcoDiesel.

Six lug. I would bet on a GVWR in the 9500 range.

I could be wrong but I don't think they make a regular cab - I think they just have King and Crew cabs.

They say a Reg cab will be coming. Just not sure if it will be available with the Cummins and as an Titan XD or just the regular Titan.

I still think it is going to be a great engine they are just trying to fill an in between spot with too heavy of a truck. With only 5 lugs on the wheel I'm going to guess the GVWR is going to be around 9,000#. They claim 2000# payload but that will be on a striped down regular cab long bed. I'm going to venture to say it will be around what the Ram 1500 payloads are.

Don't tell Audi that diesels can't race. If you follow LeMans style endurance racing you'll already know about their cars.

The latest version is the R18 -

4L TDI V-6 making 558 HP running on bio-diesel(YIKES !). The car also has a 272 HP electric motor and all wheel drive. Power for the electric motor comes from a flywheel accumulation system.

The technology on this car is amazing.

http://www.audi-motorsport.com/de/en/wec/technik.html

Audi has been racing and winning with diesels in LeMans cars for about 10 years. The earlier versions did not have an electric motor.

For the interested Florida snowbirds - Audi usually brings it to the 12 hour race at Sebring every year.
