Am I stretching my ecoboost limits?

I am considering purchasing a new travel trailer soon. Was wondering what you guys think about tow vehicle to trailer. I have a 2011 F150 Ecoboost 3.5 with Max Towing, 3.73, 11200 GTWR, 1897 Payload, 17100 GCWR.

The trailer I am considering is a Salem 31QBTS.
Dry Weight 8140
Hitch weight 885
Cargo Cap. 2867(will not load more than 1500 tops including fresh water)

I figure total trailer weight to be around 9500-9700 loaded.

let me know your opinions and experience! Thanks

Look on your driver door or post, there where be a white sticker showing all the codes then there is a yellow sticker that shows tires, cargo front and rear axle weights. What you are looking for is the last number that will show payload. For HD pkg you should see a # close to 2200lbs or there aboutsโ€ฆ

Im sorry but there is no way you have that much payload capacity on a 145" wheelbase. I come in at 1700# with everything you can add for towing minus the HD pkg

The only problem I see is the receiver and payload. The Ecoboost has plenty of power, plenty of wheelbase. But you will likely be over the 1150 pound receiver rating, and it's easy to throw a bunch of stuff in the pickup bed to go over GVWR.

Do you really need the double slide BH? Crew cab truck means 5 people. Are you taking friends? Prime Time Lacrosse 318BHS is my favorite BH, although it is growing in features and weight. Tracer 3150?

Sounds like the tail will probably wag the dog. Think you are probably going to need more truck or less trailer for safety purposes.

I believe your receiver is rated for 11500. With a 9,600 lb trailer you are exceeding your receiver rating even at 12.5% on the hitch. The trailer will also exceed the curb weight weight of your truck by greater than 50%.

I would not tow that much trailer with that TV.

Good luck,
Stu

The eco will handle it but without the HD payload package for added stability, it's too much trailer.

I haven't towed very far with mine yet, so I'm not really an expert, but I think I would try and go lighter. As Skip already said, you are liable to be over on your tongue weight. Unless you've got over 6 people, you might look at something like the Bullet I have. It is a lot lighter and has a fairly similar floorplan. http://www.keystonerv.com/bullet/

What wheel base? You will be pushed around more than you should. An f250 will haul it that much better and wont keep you guessing about what you can and can't bring with you.

I just saw you wheelbase in your sig.. Almost every car on the road will push you around when they pass.

While you are stretching the limits a bit it all depends on HOW you travel. ON my 8,000 lb. fully loaded trailer by the time I get the truck loaded with cargo and people, I am moving about 10,500 lb. against my 11,300 lb. tow rating. The trucks handles that weight very well but would expect that to at least SOME degree you also would be carrying stuff in your truck while towing. ALL of that weight goes against your rated maximum trailer. I"d also be considering just what the actual tongue weight will be when you're fully loaded because you MAY not have enough receiver capacity to handle it. The EB HD model like mine is delivered with a 1,200 lb. maximum tongue weight and that's just 50 lb. extra for my Rockwood. I would expect that your trailer would be heavier in the tongue than mine (as much as 15% of the GVWR of the trailer.

One thing to consider about the Ecoboost. You will nave almost NO diminished power at high altitude so towing only in flat land should not be an issue. I climb 8% grades in 4th gear adn 1800 RPM up to over 12,000 feet elevation.

Good luck / Skip

You will be at your limits. I'd say it's doable if you travel on flat terrain. If you do a lot of mountainous travel I would opt for something else.

Since you already have the truck you could give it a whirl as long as you understand and are prepared to upgrade the truck if the first few trips do not go well.
Does it makes sense to buy a rig that puts the TV totally at its limits?
