Apache Trail Day 1

Day One

Took the camper out for a three day trip into the Superstition Mountains along the popular Apache Trail, which is a graded gravel route through some of the most scenic terrain in Arizona.

Rainy and ominous start as we head towards the Superstitions.

Nice loop hike on the Boulder Canyon Trail near Canyon Lake.

Clouds are clearing.

Battleship Peak in center, and Weavers Needle on the right.

Canyon Lake.

Mandatory rock hucking session.

The ever present Browns Peak shrouded in clouds.

Heading to our campsite for the night.

Homeschool of hard knocks......hit a cactus and got a bit embedded in his leg.

Sunset ride.

This is why they call it the Grand Canyon State, at least in my opinion, as much of the state has canyons as Grand as the one to the north.

The reason truck campers are so cool.....can't see sunsets like this with the 35' fifth wheel we live in. Total isolation, no humans around.

Yucca marshmallow sticks.

First time for everything.

Mmmmmm..........

Tomorrow..........later.

We did the Apache Trail in a (narrow body) 26-foot motorhome, towing a car. It was slow going, but the other people along the road cheered us on. Worst spot was a couple of cars that has to back up about 1/4 mile to a wide part of the road, but they were all smiles and stopped to talk for a moment.

We were in a restaurant after we completed the trek, talking about it. A man overheard and said, "You can't take a motorhome on the Apache Trail!"

My wife turned around and said, Sir, we just did!"

Excellent pics/TR. It is so gratifying to see parents spending quality time with their kids. Not so much fun seeing the little guys cry. Thanks for sharing the trip and especially the little guy with us.

Have spent a many days and nights along the Apache Trail back in the 60s in my JEEP TRAIL days... A group of us would pull util trailers with all out tent camping supplies and sometimes would stay out for a few days...

There are many off-shoots along the main road if you know the lay of the land there...

Thanks for the memories...
