Hey All,

Looking at stepping up to a new truck and a diesel for the first time. I am looking for guidance on exhaust brakes and any differences between GM, Ford and Dodge?

Thanks in advance!

Drive all 3 and let us know what you think. I wouldn't own a diesel pickup without one.

...I like the two settings the Cummins has. Towing in the Rockies, Cascades and Sierras out west it has worked really well to the point I only need to brake in situations where I'm approaching a corner and need additional slowing - just going down a grade it'll hold speed by itself. I generally use it in auto mode along with tow/haul.

Yep. I pulled my 5er in the Teton's and Yellowstone area earlier this summer. The Exhaust brake in Tow/Haul mode did an amazing job keeping speeds controlled with little (if any) use of the brake pedal.

If my trailer is connected to my truck (2015 RAM 3500 Cummins) when I switch on the ignition, and the exhaust brake and tow/haul was enabled on the last ignition cycle, the exhaust brake re-enables but the tow/haul mode will not.

If I do not have the trailer connected, then regardless if the exhaust brake or tow/haul were enabled on the last ignition cycle, they both are off on the next ignition cycle.

That's how mine works. If I am not connected, it always ends up off the next cycle. I was thinking the comment about being always on was regardless of connected to trailer or not.

This is CORRECT!

Interesting, I don't think my truck does this. Maybe because it's a manual transmission?

In any case I run the EB on full at all times, towing or not. It works fantastic! :B

WHHHHAAAATTTTT??????

I think he just forgot to add that full exhaust mode is also selectable as the exhaust brake in auto mode is always on and available.

You can turn off auto mode as well.

Yes, when I start the truck the exhaust brake is on but tow/haul is off. I have to turn on (push button) for tow/haul mode. I actually run with two/haul mode on even when not towing because it so easily slows the truck and use of foot brake is greatly reduced ๐Ÿ™‚

The you are not towing you have to turn ON the EB.

My interpretation was he said "is on all the time" meaning there is no way to turn it off.

I use mine in full exhaust mode when towing, just tap the brake and let it do its thing. I even flip it on sometimes just driving around empty.

The EBs work great on all 3 and all 3 are great trucks. Check them all out and buy what you like. I went with the Dodge Cummins because of the proven drivetrain and the the fact I could get the Dodge for about $10,000 less than the other two. I see you are in Temple City; check out Browning Dodge in Norco, they sell a lot of Dodge Cummins trucks (that is if you decide to go Dodge)
