Can someone out there that is familiar with the All Wheel Drive system on the Dodge Durango give me an explanation of how it works? Do all 4 wheels "drive" at the same time, or, do the rear wheels drive most of the time and the front wheels "kick" in when the terrain calls for it? Any other explanation will be appreciated. Thank you

Not necessarily, different systems operate differently. The Quatro system in my Audi puts 60% of the power to the rear wheels and 40% to the front under normal conditions but that can change when traction is lost to one axle. I believe Subaru and some others also use an unequal torque split.

The one that I am looking at is a 2007 Dodge Durango Limited. The owner says it has AWD but that is all he knows. Can anyone enlighten me any further on this model? Does is have 4 hi and 4 lo or do you know. Also, does this running system give a lot of trouble or are they pretty dependable. Also, thanks for the information so far. It has helped me a lot.
I have a 09 aspen AWD with 4.7 engine ,ones with 5.7 hemi have a selector switch with 4hi and 4lo which I assume is more like a 4wheel drive pickup. My Awd turns all 4 wheels if you jack it off the ground but I think the axles are driven through clutches that slip to allow wheels to turn at different speeds when going around curves without crabbing or jerking like a real 4wheel drive .I don't know if it will spin both axles if you really got it stuck.It might drive the axle that spins the easiest and only allow the other axle to only partially drive through the clutches. I've never been in that bad a situation with mine so I'm not sure.
We have a 2008 Aspen, which is just a Durango in a tuxedo. It only kicks in the fronts if the back spin. It also has 4x4 lock, which is same as 4 high and 4 low.
