f150 versus f250

What is the advantage/disadvantage of a f250 over a f150 if the drivetrain are the same and the tow capacity on both 15,000lbs? Would be used to pull a 27 foot travel trailer not a 5th wheel.

Thanks

Are you talking axle tubes or trying to make reference to the semi-float vs. full float axle shafts on the SD's?

The axle tubes are pressed in and plug welded for both trucks last time I checked.

Well, you can never say that again.

I HATED this truck

It was TOO much truck for my needs. Best day of my automotive life was when that truck drove off into the sunset with its new owners.

9 mpg.. hot floor boards...uncomfortable seats..handled terribly. Wrong truck for me and my families needs.

Sure did look good though.

Must admit that the 05 and up Superduties handle much nicer.

OP

My next truck will likely be a "Half ton" with 1500-1900 lbs of payload...I'm a Ford guy traditionally. I have owned half a dozen Ford trucks and two Ram's. I've had two motors fail on me in my life so far and they were both GM's.

That being said... The 2015 F150 doesn't appeal to me right now. I just can't get accustomed to that front end.

Seems I am in a minority here because they are selling like hot cakes around here.

My previous dually was an example of over-trucking... I would have been much better served by a truck that met ALL my automotive needs. Not just pulling a trailer.

I would often have to park in four spaces like the F450 above. Just not an easy vehicle to live with when not towing... now that's just for ME.. different people have different needs.

A half ton with 400 lb ft of tq, 360-400 hp is more than enough for me, if the payload can get up to 1500 ish lbs plus. These are much more truck than many of the 3/4 tons of the past.

Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with a half ton...as long it is used within
it's ratings...but...many insist on a 'half ton' badge...even though
they need a higher class TV...so all or most of the OEM marketing
folks have 'fake half ton' that is badged: "half ton", but has
'some' components and GVWR in the next higher class truck...

I own two half ton pickups

WHICH F150 half ton do you own?

They range from +6K GVWR up to +8K GVWR...which I call the 'fake
half ton'....a 3/4 ton normally has a 8.6K GVWR

The 'regular' half tons has 'P' class tires (passenger class
tires) that needs to be de-rated a min of 9% when used on pickups
and SUVs.

Fake half ton pickups has the next higher class tires, 'LT' class

'Regular' half ton's has +4K RGAWR...where as 3/4 ton has +6K
RGAWR...as does 'some' of the fake half tons at +5K up to +6K RGAWR

Tell us which class tires and RGAWR of your half ton?

My Silverado has a 6,200 GVWR and a +4K RGAWR

My 3/4 ton Suburban has a 8,600 GVWR and a 6K RGAWR

🙂 Hi, could you explain what you mean by a "Fake Half Ton"? And what is wrong with owning a half ton? I own a half ton / F-150 is there a problem with that?

honestly. you will never get the 2500 truck owners to admit that a 150 can tow, and tow well. You will never get them to admit that "Some" F150s have a higher payload than "Some" F250s. There is a 250 for sale in this area that only has a 1400lb payload capacity. Why. the diesel is so heavy, it take it all. My F150 has a 1800lb pay load. Which one would I rather use. The 150 of course. More truck than the above mentioned 250.

Also If you check you will find there is really no such thing as a 1/2 ton truck, Unless you are talking about a Ranger, or Canyon. The 1500s, and 150s all have a higher payload than 1/2 ton. BTW, 1/2 ton equals 1000lbs. So as "most" 1500s, and F150s have at least 1500lb of payload. that pretty much makes them 3/4 ton truck, as 1500lb is 3/4 of a ton.

So find the truck that best suits your needs. Our opinions will just mess you up.

What 150 has a tow capacity of 15,000#??

Let's start a list.
Bigger Stronger frame.
Bigger Brakes.
Bigger axles (you can't get the same running gear in a 150 as a 250 period).!

Bigger axles (Full floating NOT semi Floating) this is more bearing surface, and the axle only turns the wheel, the spindle of the axle carries the load.

Keep in mind a 150 Max/Max is just that the Max 150, the 250 is a derated 350!

Just because the truck looks big, doesn't mean it is big where it counts!
Not enough payload to carry either hitch weight. I can't imagine the thrill of towing 15,000# with a 150! :B

Many 150's should be able to tow a 27' TT. It sounds like the 15,000# you are referring to is GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) this is the total weight of the TV and the TT.

The F150 Max Tow HD comes with E rated tires. What did your 3/4 ton come with?

The EB already bumped the 6.2l out of the 1/2 tons.

Interesting read:
"It’s widely believed that the powerful, but thirsty, 6.2L SOHC V-8 will be put out to pasture with the next-gen Super Duty, leaving Ford’s 5.0L DOHC V-8 or even the possibility of a version of the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. "

No 1/2 ton truck has a tow capacity of 15k. Did you mean combined weight rating?

To further my point, here's a 3/4 truck owner asking questions a few minutes later about a larger truck because he says his 13,500 GVW trail is too much for his present 3/4 ton.

13,500# trailer too much for my 3/4 ton.
