F250 6.2L vs. 6.7L TD

Currently towing a Keystone 31RBDS 7800dry or about 9000 loaded with a 2011 Nissan Armada. (Let the comments begin)

But trying to decide on a 2012 F250 Lariat 6.2L nicely equipped (tow capacity 12K) for $37K or a 2015 F250 with a 6.7L TD bare bones SLT (Tow capacity 14K) for $42K. Both have about 20K miles on them.

My head is spinning trying to decide which is the better way to go.

As far as value, your decision is a complete no brainer, IMHO. Only $3K more for a truck with same miles but 3 years newer, plus it has the very expensive option of the diesel engine.

For towing, the diesel is always better, plus as someone said, the diesel gives you headroom to tow a heavier RV should you ever desire to, and trust the folks on this forum, many many of us have found ourselves moving to a heavier bigger RV even tho we did not expect to.

And the diesel resale will be much much higher down the road than a gasser 3 years older. You'd be money ahead long term to buy the diesel.

I have pretty much the same trailer. I tow it with a 2013 F150 MaxTow but am in the process (hopefully) of getting a 2015 F250 Crew 6.2L. I towed it with my buddy's 2014 F250 gasser and it was great.

I think it's funny how you guys that are posting going from diesel to gas all had old 7.3's and say the 6.2 is fine. I would hope it would be. LOL!! Go drive you a 6.7 Ford diesel and then say the same thing. HAHAHA!!!!

OP, the 6.2 will do the job just fine. The trucks now days all have enough power to get the job done. Heck you could tow 20,000# with the 6.2. People did it with a lot less power years ago, just took longer. Times are changing and so is the norm. When you can have a truck that will hold the speed limit 99% of the time in OD towing 20,000+# then anything that can't do it is considered not capable when in all reality it will be just fine. It's all going to have to be determined by you and the comfort level you want to achieve in your towing experience. If you don't mind your truck revving to higher RPM than normal then gas will do just fine. If you want to sit back and ride with the engine doing the job at a lower relaxing RPM then the diesel is for you. Only you are going to be able to make YOU happy.

So is the gas not 5th wheel towing capable?

They can, but either need a lighter 5er, or really low gears!
I tow an 11,000# 5er with 14 year old diesel with less than 300 Hp and 3.55 gears, I only need to drop my 5 speed 4th, to pull most hills. Just turned 281,000 miles.
I can't fathom what pulling a 14,000 to 16,000 5er would be like with 100 more Hp and about 250# more of tourque!

He's not towing 14k lbs and if he was, he would likely need to move up to a 1 ton (SRW would likely be OK)

I'm also in the catagory who went from diesel to gas (need to update our signature). Our 5th wheel is around the same weight as the OP's and the gas V10 we swapped out for does just fine. Yes, it needs to drop out of Overdrive more often on hills but nothing outrageous. It's just the nature of gas engines. They develope thier power at higher RPM.

The MPG is down but so is the per gallon price of gas vs diesel, so $/mile is about the same. We have around 250mile range which is longer than I want to tow without stopping anyway.

Check the rear end too.
I was looking at upgrading as well and noticed that Ford is running 2 rear ends in those 6.2l and they seem to be all over on them. I believe they have 3.73 and 4.10 from what I recall. From what the liar sales guys were telling me they do and will tow different and slight on mileage as well.

Now there is a good one for you. :h

And there is the old wives tale of having to stop for gas every few miles. Did you know that an F 250 short bed like my 2012 comes with a 37 gal juice tank?

So here is one folk that switched from the 7.3 psd to the 6.2 gasser and will never look back. The gasser meets my needs and i just do not need a diesel even though they are great motors.

The OP has a 9K trailer and has never indicated wanting to upgrade to a 5th wheel. How did this discussion become an argument about towing a 14K 5th wheel with the 6.2???

The 6.2 is a very capable engine when used within it's towing specs as well as the 6.7.

If the OP chooses either they are both great choices.

OP, I have the X engine because it fit my needs. I really don't care about your needs here because I want to talk about why I got my X engine to fit my needs and why I love my X engine. So let me give a paragraph on how great this X engine is along how horrible that Y engine is and how I don't need or want it. This is not about your needs here OP so if I don't like Y engine then you shouldn't either. I will also throw in a little ramblings on about how my brother's cousin's sister-in-law's uncle's neighbor at the RV park said he hates his Y engine and wished he got the X engine instead.

Yep, that is the way most of these posts sound to me.

I have heard good things about the 6.2L. I wish I could swap my the 5.4L in my 2010 F250 for one.

OP
I have a 2012 F-250 lariat with the 6.2 and its loaded minus the nav. I tow a 9500# loaded fiver and it does excellent! It does in fact have a higher payload (2750#'s per the sticker in the door jam) than the diesel similarly equipped. I did have to add a leaf and installed Bilsteins as stock it squatted badly with the rig attached. It sucked that mods had to be done to get it to handle the load which is very much within the trucks specs, but I just wasn't happy with the squat and bounce with the factory set up. Other than this small issue, the truck has been fantastic and tows great. Between the two you've mentioned and the weights you quoted, the 6.2 will do a amazing job. Especially coming from the TV you have now.

Consider how you will use the truck the most. If you only tow relatively short distances in the summer for weekends, the gasser may be the better choice. Tow frequently? Diesel is hard to beat, IMO. The maintenance claim made by most is questionable. The only maintenance I do on my Cummins is oil changes. If you do not run a diesel hard enough, often enough you can get into the dirty O2 sensor hassle. But even that can often be fixed with giving it some exercise.

Replacing fuel filters on your diesel is not part of your maintenance plan? In addition adjusting valve lash on your engine is also a maintenance item, although very infrequent.
