F250 PSD vs F150 5.0L towing 9k lbs

The F250 got 9 mpg towing a 9k horse trailer. I wonder how folks here tow a 35' high profile 5er and get 12 mpg out of their diesels? :W

VIDEO

The 5.0L got 8.4 mpg towing the same trailer.

I would suspect the diesel had a regen too. I would expect considerably better mileage towing that trailer with a diesel because my Ram is very consistent at 10.5-11 mpg towing my high profile 16k lb fiver (hand calculated).

When the particulate filters first came out it seemed that for every diesel truck test they made a big deal out of doing a regen before the test. I don't think that I have seen that mentioned lately. Of course, a true test should last an entire cycle of the filter getting dirty and then getting a regen. Or at least a fudge factor for the inevitable regens if you know that one was not done during the test.

Also, why did the F150 only do 64.7 of the 66 mile loop (19:27 on the video), but they still used 66 on the math?

The F250 was 65.2 (10:59) so it seem there was a half mile difference in the loops driven. Or they are not even consistent enough to reset the trip summary before departing the pumps.

Did the diesel regen during it's test run? :W

there are a few issues here, first and biggest these two always get brand new trucks that are not broken in from the factories for there tests. anyone who had owned a new powerstroke or most diesels for that matter know that they get way better milage after 30000 miles of break in. second it was a short run and probably heavy with some stop and go to start, third they are driving 70 mph, and 4th its a bumper tow with a big gap between the truck and trailer which will have more air drag. when I went from a 9000lb bumper pull to a 13000 5th I actualy increased my milage by 1.8mpg. I get 13.3 towing my fithwheel at 60mph, at 50-55 I get better, I think the best I got was 14.6 (these are the us numbers) at 70-75 mph that drops to about 10.7mpg.

want better milage, slow down, I know its hard 😉

66 miles is hardly enough distance to even come close to an accurate mileage calculation.

I agree. Too many ways to get skewed results filling less than half a tank.

All I can say is that I get much better fuel economy when pulling my horse trailers than TFL trucks get pulling theirs. Maybe I am easier on the brake and gas than they are but I want to get to my destination with the horses intact. Otherwise I don't know what they do to get such rotten fuel economy. I get 10-11mpg towing with my Ecoboost F150's and just under 9.5 to 9.9 with my 35' diesel motorhome. I didn't pull a horse trailer with the rental F250 I had but I would expect 12-13mpg if I had. Maybe someday TFL will invite me to go with them to see how they burn so much fuel.

Didn't watch the video so I dont have an explanation for the low mileage. What I can say from my own personal experience is I average 12 pulling our 10,600# loaded mid profile fifth wheel. Yesterday we pulled 220 miles and averaged 12.3 mpg. With that being said this is Not hand calculated but what the computer is telling me. But based on the fuel gauge I got to believe it's not far off. The only time I get sub 10 mpg is when it's in regen mode.

Edit: I wanted to add I travel at 65 mph to average 12 mpg
