F350 with new motor

I posted a thread just under a week ago asking some questions about purchasing a F350 w/ 6.7 diesel. It turned out that was a good deal and someone scooped it before I even had a chance to see it. So I have my dealer looking around for others. He called me with an interesting option and I was looking for pros and cons. He has found an 2011 F350 Lariat/FX4. It had engine issues. They are offering to pick it up, replace the motor with a brand new 2016 6.7 and then sell it to me. It would come with their standard 90 day used vehicle warranty but the motor since brand new would have 2 yr, unlimited mileage full warranty. Just looking for thoughts on whether this is a good option if the price is right (which it is) and if there are pros and cons folks can think of. Also, are there items that I should ask that they replace at the same time as the motor since I would expect I would not have to pay labour since they are already ripping into it.

Thanks

The more I think about this it has me questioning why dealer #1 has a DOA F350 that they're offering to sell to your dealer? :h

I'm starting to wonder if the truck at Dealer #1 was bought back by Ford Corporate because of the prematurely exploded engine, or if it is a lemon law buy-back issue. I'm not sure if any of that really matters. At the very base of it, there's no way your dealer can put a BRAND NEW motor in this truck (parts and labor) and make any money selling it to unless they are getting the truck for next to nothing and possibly getting a financial kick from FoMoCo in the process.

In the end, if the rest of the truck is in good shape, the motor is brand new, and all of the potential failure points are addressed this could be a good truck for you....assuming the price is right.

The price is good.
I am getting lots of good info from here and the ford forums. I just need to convince myself that enough has been replaced so I feel like it's a good starting place. I will have the oasis report in a day or two. That should help. The dealer staged its been a Ford maintained vehicle so will see what's on the report.

They called me back and confirmed it will be a new motor direct from Ford. Not reman or rebuilt.

I'd also be curious of the reason the OEM motor ate itself. 2011 would be one of the early revisions of the Bosch CP4 HPFP. As I recall those would scatter internally sending all kinds of shrapnel through the fuel system, trashing injectors and possibly the engine.

If you're set on this truck, I'd be sure to find the cause of the failure and be positive those components were replaced along with the new engine.

I would be very surprised if indeed was a 2016 motor band new. When I had my '03 6.0, Ford replaced the motor at 32K w/a re-man. Wouldn't put a brand new one in cause they said " we can't put a brand new engine in a used truck". Needless to say, the re-man ran for 130K miles till I got rid of truck (160k). Don't know how you could verify if motor they put in is in fact a brand new never been used motor.

Thanks for the info. I have asked them to confirm that its brand new and not a rebuild. Will see what they say.

They called me back and confirmed it will be a new motor direct from Ford. Not reman or rebuilt. I have asked for a list of the items other than motor that will be replaced. It seems that most people say the glow plugs would be a good thing to see on the list. I will also be asking for a price to have the turbo replaced as they have already told me they plan to put the original back on.

Yeh - but you left out it is Ford diesel.

I'd do that if it was the right truck AND I verified I was happy with what I was getting repair wise.
Dunno if it's that easy to upgrade turbo for the better E brake though, or even to a new model engine. Someone more knowledgeable can speak to that. Hit up a Pstroke forum and get their 2 cents too.
Either way, imo, the truck isn't worth a penny more, actually less because it is a problem vehicle, than a comparable clean truck. Heck, the engine is supposed to outlast the truck. Half the reason for getting a diesel.....

Pretty much required reading for you OP.

This will give you an idea what kind of cost you are dealing with. Notice the dates. Things have gone up since that time.

Hell, the last time I checked to get a new Hemi they wanted 13K for it! And that was my cost! And that was like 3 years ago. :E

Get the part number from the engine they're putting in. If it ends with RM, it's a reman. If it ends with an A, or C, it's new. Remans run about $6500. Not sure how much more for new. The warranty is the same for both :h If you really want it I would insist on new 15+ turbo to go with the engine.

15 to 20K depending on what you want/need on it. :E The fuel system alone is over 12K now. :E

Wow ! With a price like that, I can't see how or why a dealer would offer to put in a new engine in an older truck.

If I insist on a new 15+ turbo how much am I asking for roughly? In terms of cash. New to diesels so I'm not sure how to price it online.

What issues does the current engine have? Maybe knock 10 grand off and take it to someone else?

Putting a brand new engine in a 2011 truck ? Truck is 5 model years, close to 6 model years old. I believe new motors from the factory (where else could a new motor come from) are extremely expensive.

As other have said, I could see putting a reman engine of more likely an older engine that came from a salvage yard in a 5 -6 year old truck, but not a brand new engine from the factory. Too costly I would think to do and also what kind of profit could be made doing this ?

Anyone know what a brand new Ford truck engine costs ?

Price I saw online was $8k for motor online. Can't seem to find the link anymore though.
