I recently upgraded from a 1500 to 2500 and made my first trip towing our 7,000lb trailer 1,450 miles round trip from Jacksonville, FL to Jackson, TN. The first major improvement I noticed was the 6 speed transmission. I had a 2004 ram 1500, so this is an amazing difference. I set the cruise control at 65 mph and she stayed in 5th gear at 2,000rpm. I thought I was going to have to manually select the gear on the automatic transmission, but the truck did fantastic. She down shifted to 4th (2500rpm) going up the hills and on the bigger hills 3rd (3500rpm). When she went to 3rd gear I was in the back of my seat holding on and I was pulling about 7,000 lbs. the other thing that was really great was the stability. I know you're supposed to have two hands on the wheel, but I found myself cruising down the road with one hand on the wheel. The truck has the 5.7L Hemi and 3.73 gear. I'm also really happy with the acceleration towing the trailer. My old truck had 3.55 gear and 345hp Hemi. I really notice the extra get up and go when stopped and up the hills. I really wanted the Ram 2500 6.4L hemi or Ford 250 6.2L with all the great reports people have made about them, but couldn't find any in my price range with low miles. So far the performance of the truck has been amazing.
