Fuel mileage 2017 gas trucks

Looking at newer trucks not diesel but gas wondering the fuel mileage for them my old truck does not like to start in real cold weather in Canada unless I plug in so I been thinking about a newer gas truck. What truck and engine size do you have and what kind of fuel mileage do you get.

Here are my stats for my 2015 Ram 6.4 w/3.73 gears carrying a 2,400# Lance 815 (7" narrower than most TCs). All data is hand calc and recorded in an excel spreadsheet. Always fill up at the start and end of a trip so the mileage is actual for the trip though does include the 20 minutes to run the camper to the storage yard and unload. Interstate is usually 64mph, backroads about 55mph with the mix being about 70% backroads. Empty mileage is almost exclusive the 15 miles one way to work through about 10 traffic lights in rural city setting.

I usually do not use Tow/Haul mode because it raises the shift points and locks out 6th gear (double overdrive). The time or two I've used T/H for entire tank because of headwinds and slowing down to 55mph, I only lost 1mpg.

When doing my purchase analysis which inncluded decision on diesel vs gas, trip cost, overall operating cost etc, I only used 10mpg so I'm well pleased with the mpgs.

Realistically, expect about 12MPG overall with a 2500 or 3500 series gas truck. You can squeak it to 15 with lots of highway driving.

I use Fuelly.com and keep track of every fill up. My truck in signature has 33,000 miles on it and I am at 12.5 mpg city/hwy combined for the life of the truck.
I have seen as high as 16 mpg on the highway running at 65 empty and as low as 9 hauling my truck camper combined with my ATV and trailer bucking a head wind.
Normal conditions hauling my truck camper is 10-11.5 mpg.

I'm kinda weird, but I have every gas receipt for all of my vehicles and calculate the mileage and expense's on an annual basis. For my 2012 GMC 2500 6.0 it's every April. I purchased my camper in Aug of 2013, so the first year and 4 months it was truck and 16' trailer with ATV's, after that it's my Wolf Creek 850 and the same trailer with ATV/UTV. My truck is not a daily driver, it's my dedicated weekender camping rig.

2017 F350 SRW 6.2. 12.5 mpg in and out of town. Once a week I go out of town 30 miles and then come back and go again 30 miles a different direction and come back. Speed set at 65 to 69 mph. The rest of the week I'm driving around town every day.

Long trip 15 to 16 mpg speed set at 65 or under.
Long trip 10.5 mpg speed set at 80 mph.

All the above is unloaded. I sold my fifth wheel and never had a chance to tow it and haven't bought a TC yet 🙂

I'm with brholt on this one. I think there are a lot of well meaning people that when you ask them about fuel mileage, they tell you the best they ever got, or the complete believe the trip computer, or they are really bad at math. And there are also a significant amount of people who just downright exaggerate.

I think the best way to get a real comparison would be to check fuelly for the specific vehicles you are considering. At least that way the numbers should be hand calculated, and they are over hundreds of thousands of miles with many users instead of just a one off message on a forum.

That said, I don't think there is a significant difference in any of the current HD offering in regard to MPG. The RAM 6.4 will be similar to the Ford 6.2 which is similar to the GM 6.0. Find the interior that works the best for you, and don't worry about the small difference in MPG.

I think most would say 9-12 average for 2017 models that I’ve seen posted here depending on how they drive and what terrain they travel in. That is, is it flat at low elevation or regular higher mountains? Do they never drive over 60 or do they routinely drive up to 75? Is the TC a tall one or short one? Is the truck towing a heavy trailer or is it without trailer all of the time?

One other thought, most people say they got about the same MPG with fifth wheels as larger TCs due to the wind resistance being the biggest factor. Assuming you agree with that reasoning, you could look for what MPG fifth wheel owners are getting and have a good approximation.

In any case, if you search the archive here, you can find a lot more numbers.

2018 ram 3500 DRW 6.4 hemi rear wheel drive 4:10’s , crew cab , 13-14 mpg empty at 65 mph , average 10.5 mpg with a host mammoth TC loaded for a trip with some water two 30# propane tanks and gear .

2015, Ram 3500, SRW, 4x4, short bed, mega cab, 6.4 gas. With 5000 lbs of extra weight from camper and goodies it gets 8.5-10.5 mpg. Empty 13-15 mpg. With the massive amount of torque and HP of the new diesel trucks you cannot make the diesel pay for itself due to increase in fuel economy, and if al you plan to do is haul a slide in camper the gasser is more than enough to get the job done. With that said, when you are running up long steep mountain grades be prepared for that gasser to gear down and the rpms to come up to 3500-5000 rpm to maintain speed.

We have a 2016 and a 2017 F-250 4x4 regular cab 6.2L pickups.

12 mpg empty on the freeway and 7-8 towing.

2017 F-250, 6.2, 3.73 gear 4x4. No exaggerated fish story here... about 10.5 mpg unloaded driving around town, 15 mpg highway if I keep it under 60 mph and 8 ish (and as crappy as 5.5) pulling 7,500 lbs.
