Getting the spare tire out....

I got looking at the spot to put the crank in to get my spare tire out of my truck and seen I won't be able to get it out with the truck camper on. So if i need to get my spare out on the road I would have to unload the camper, to get it out. Wife said that if we got a flat to call CAA and let them deal with it instead. What do you others do if you need to get your spare out? Take it out and mount it some where else?

Did that, done that. I-405 southbound in Renton, WA, exit 3, in the 'V' between three lanes of traffic and the exit ramp. The overhang of the camper blocks access to the hole for the handle. Jacks down, tie-downs unhooked, and I lifted the camper enough to get access. Yeah, this is in the 'not fun' category.

Last year I had a flat (new tires btw) on I 94 at the 127 south exit, picked up a spike in the front driver's side tire, got it on the berm and getting the spare out wasn't a big deal but dismounting the drivers side front tire with about a foot clearance between me and the inconsiderate drivers that could not slow down or move over a foot was what concerned me. Had my 4 ways on and I put out triangles too. It was scary, people passing inches from me at 70 per.

Everybody is in a hurry to get nowhere and don't give a hoot about their fellow man (or woman).

I've consider that myself. My truck is so old I'd have to fabricate a mount. and it would have to be hinged so the tire laid down on the ground to remove it from the mount.

On a Dodge that year the part you put the rod in is a 5/8 hex
I use a 7/16 bolt 4 1/2" long with a coupling jambed onto the threaded end , now has 5/8 on both ends , put the coupling end into the truck receiver and use a ratcheting 5/8 wrench on the other end to lower the tire
Clears my camper

Have changed tires several times ??. I have an Arctic Fox 992 on a 2012 F350 Dually. One can get to the spare tire drop/lift hole in the rear easily and it turns out that a socket & ratchet fits the end of the crank rod extension nicely. Just sit under the camper and ratchet it down. I usually lift the camper some with the camper jacks get more clearance and make lighter to lift the truck with the bottle jack.

Why are you having so many flats?

Thanks for the ideas, my truck is a 2001 Dodge 2500 diesel. The crank for the tire gets blocked on me when the tailgate is down and it needs to be down for the camper to fit in the box. Looks like maybe I should come up with some sort of plan I guess. Still not sure what to do.

Take the tailgate off before you load the camper?

You could move it to the front. I used Reese products for receiver & carrier.

With my F350 and Igloo I am able to drop the spare with the camper on the truck. I tested it to make sure before we headed to AK last year. The access to the tire is through the rear bumper near the license plate and there is plenty of room to insert the handle and drop the tire. Other TC's may block this access but the Igloo does not.

I had no problem dropping the spare on the side of I5 after a blow out with my Lance 1055 on my F350 either. never even lowered the camper jacks to change the tire.

Been there done that, I use some long 3/8" extensions and a ratchet to get my tire down. You can break it all down so it will fit in the ford hole by the back license plate. I removed the special lock on the spare but I have an older truck, not sure if it is the same with your truck. I have had to do it twice so far, each time hasn't been to bad to crawl under and get the spare down, I put the messed up tire in the camper and keep on truckin.

If all else fails just unhook the camper and lift it up to get to the spare.

With the extension on the crank of my Ford, I cleared the rear bumper of my short bed AF811. I carry my Ram spare on my 42” SuperTruss.

I agree, removing the TC on the side of the road would present a another more serious safety situation.

My stock jack set that came with my truck has several, I think three, extensions that you slide through the hole just above the bumper to facilitate you cranking the tire down.

If I just just two of the extensions it gets the crank just about a foot past the bumper. Now the crank handle is not set up to attach to that extension so I purchased a ratcheting type open end wrench that I can slip over the extension and quickly lower the spare.

This is the wrench I purchased on Amazon for my set up.

Our new tc will be a foot longer so I may need another section of crank rod.
