GM Pump Rub in Transfer Case

GM transfer cases 261 and 263 are prone to a condition known as Pump Rub. It is where the pump used to circulate the fluid in the transfer case wiggles back and forth wearing a hole in the transfer case, allowing fluid to leak out and if not caught the loss of fluid will destroy the transfer case.
Know of this condition I installed a modification to prevent the pump rub, but I was too late and had a hole in my transfer case not knowing it. I still had plenty of fluid so the damage was limited to the case housing.
I am currently in the process of replacing the damaged transfer case housing with the pump rub mod to prevent damage in the future.

My point is to frequently check the fluid level in your transfer case, and at the first sign of leakage if you see any, perform the pump bub fix.

Maybe I've just been away from four-wheel-drive trucks for a while but since when have they used an actual pump in the transfer case? Any transfer case I ever opened many years ago was just splash lubrication... My how the years have passed! This here used to be all farmland as far as the eye could see!

They have complete cases, kits to fix the problem on your case or just the tail housing.

I had pump rub on my Yukon XL. Had less than 70k miles. I knew something was happening because I had a oily substance on the back of the vehicle after driving.

My 2006 developed a leak from the xfer case and it wasn't the famous pump rub. Be carful assuming just because you get a leak. With all the people having the problem I realize I'm probably in the minority but be sure to diagnose the problem correctly and don't assume.

My 2002 2500HD/8.1/Alison had pump rub...rubbed a hole right through the magnesium case. The hole was there for 2-3 years and I finally checked the fluid. It was bone dry of course. Put a little JB weld on the hole and refilled. It works fine to this day. 240,000 mile still going strong. Is it really that big of an issue?

Yes they are as rare as Black Rhinos and they fetch top dollar at the scrap yards.
Just changed my fluid the past week, should have saved my money till next time. The band adjustment on the tranny sure made a big difference though.

We took our 2006 Duramax in and had to condition fixed before it became a problem. We plan on keeping the truck so it needed to remedied.

I have heard many stories about pump rub, but have had no issues yet.
I have one truck with 360,000 miles and one with 145,000. I thought about doing the upgrade, but I just keep an eye on it.
