Greasing the hitch

Since you all have been awesome at helping me out, time to ask another question.

Should I be greasing my weight distribution hitch arms and ball? If so, with what?

Reese Grease...the same stuff I use on my ball and my stabilizer metal-on-metal touch points. Will help keep the ball from getting pitted over time. I know this from experince.

I suppose you could, I have never seen any concern or know anyone with issues. Itโ€™s not a bearing spinning etc .

I use a little lithium grease on my bars. Iโ€™ve never heard of using wax paper. Looks to me like youโ€™d have it wore through by the time you got out of the driveway. Just my thoughts, but I may be wrong.

How long does that wax paper last?
I would think after one trip, short trip, the wax paper would have a hole worn in it pretty quick and then you are back to metal on metal. Is it still separating the metal when you take the trailer off the ball?
I tried plastic pieces on the bearing surface where the WD bars go, but that did not last long at all.

I've used the same tube of Lucas Red & Tacky #2 for years. Easy to apply without a gun, I used chop sticks. Wiped it off after each trip.

I also use tube of lithium grease. The small opening on the end lets you put the grease where it is needed. When we do our final set up after about 6000 miles of towing I use plenty of paper towels and some WD40 to clean up before our next run.

Have been using the double layer of wax paper for years, for better or worse maybe but the wax paper is some slippery stuff and never get grease on my pants. In the 40+ years before I started using wax paper I used nothing, no grease, no anything, just kept the components clean.

Any time you have metal to metal contact with friction you are going to have wear. The idea of the grease is to reduce that friction and therefore the wear.

Almost every single hitch manufacturer, with the exception of one (Andersen) that I am aware of, recommends the use of some type of grease on the tow ball. There have been instances of people not using grease and hitch ball came loose in the head because of the friction and turning motion during turns.

In addition, if you have L shaped WD bars that insert up into the hitch head you should grease those bars every time you tow. There is a tremendous amount of pressure between those bar ends and the hitch head receptacles. Dry bars will often make a lot of squeaks and grinding noises. Over time, the bars ends will wear into an oval shape and the inside of the hitch head will wear quite badly on the bottom edge closest to the trailer. When this happens, you will get less and less WD from your bars and find you have to take up another link or adjust the bars up tighter. This is a clue that your bars are wearing out. Contrary to what was implied in a previous statement - a hitch head or WD hitch does not last forever.

I used to remove my bars at the end of a towing session and wipe them off along with the ball before stowing away. Then I would apply a light coating of wheel bearing grease before every new tow.
Did this routine for over 50 years until stopping towing recently. Always worked for me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes I think it is wise to grease the friction points at the pivots. I used to keep a little tub of wheel bearing grease in the pass thru to grease the hitch ball and the rub points of the W.D. bars. Lately I've found that a little tube of white grease that is smaller than a tube of tooth paste lasts a long time and way less messy to deal with.

I put a dab of grease on the ball and spring bar points everytime I hook up. Cheap automotive wheel bearing grease is all you need 3 bux for a big jar
