Helps between F350 Drw, and the F450. Which?

Starting to look at going DRW. We will probably upgrade to a longer Lifestyle 5th, which is heavy. Our current 31 Ft. Cameo is also heavy, although the F250 with 6.7 handles it fine. I would like to hear if anybody has had experience with the F350 DRW, versus the F450. I can't see but 2000 lbs. difference in total trailer weight with F450. however; some F350s won't pull as much as other. I think the difference is rear ends. Thanks for some input.

Ken,
The F450 up to '07 had those big 12000 lb RAWR suspension and 15k/16k GVWRs and 19.5" tires and wheels.
Most Rvers pulling a trailer simply don't need this much pickup truck.
Ford dropped the RAWR to 9k-9.5k lbs and the same tires and wheels as the one ton DRW for a softer ride.
The F450 uses up to 4.30/4.88 in certain year models and used lots of fuel according to those that had them.

Use this web from Ford when looking at different year model F350 or F450 specs. https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/topics/techspec.html.

Also note the F350 DRW has some of the bigger payloads over the F450.

You are correct. The difference is in the rear end gears provided by Ford on the F-450. If you plan on a DRW truck I would go with the F-450 for towing a very heavy 5th wheel.

F450 (pre '15, assume '15 as well but don't know for sure) comes with 4.30 rear, I believe. My F350 is standard with 3.73s. Wide track front is simply awesome - turning radius like a car!

I would have gone F450, but was going for year-end deals and had more choices with the F350 DRW and I'm not towing that heavy.

Sound like the F450 might be the way to go for your situation...

The RAM 3500 has as much capacity as a F450, if insurance or licensing are issues with the F450.
The Ram is only only comparable to the current F450. The new F450 will become a big-boy truck again. I believe Ford will re-introduce the "Wide-Track" option into the F350 again, which effectively makes it the same as the current F450.

But in 2016 Ram will introduce the Ram 9000 Destroyer with eight, yes eight wheels on the first rear axle, 12 wheels on the second rear axle, four wheels on the front axle with computer controlled, hydraulic ram steering, a Cummins UltraProOctoTurbo Diesel that consumes 100 gallons a second, the latest EPA urea and feces injecting emissions enhancements (they will no longer call it control), a 15' teflon-coated titanium/duranium bed with built-in retractable 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches, a class XXX receiver hitch that could almost support pulling the moon out of orbit (you read that right, THE MOON), and the ultra-suites cab which seats a dozen with full reclining seats. The opional variable air suspension that will raise it as much as 12' for those wanting tall, and lower it to where the body is within 1/1000th of a nanometer of the road surface for a "low rider look" that will scrape the hair off of an amoeba on the road surface (or so the salesman will tell you, we know that Amoebas rarely have hair).

Then in 2020 Chevy will release the....

I believe the 2015 F-450 will have the 19.5" wheels and tires, ten lugs and bigger brakes like the 2008 - 2010 F-450's had.

This should make quite a difference in towing and payload ratings.

The current F-350 and F-450 seem to be very similar.

I have a 2013 F-450 and they are. The big advantage to me was the F-450's much smaller turning radius. In my case that's the difference between going in my home driveway frontwards and turning around or backing down 600 ft of narrow gravel with a 30' FW.

I'm bummed about missing out on the bigger wheels and brakes.

I was going to go with a 450 6.7 until I checked with my insurance, it would have cost me $900.00 more a year. They said it would now be commercial with the 450,, go figure!!!!! T-10
