I'm curios about the 6.7.

Been sitting here in my 5th wheel today while it's raining outside.

I've been seeing some 2007 Dodge trucks for sale. Some have the 5.9 and some have the 6.7. If you were buying one, which would it be? The 5.9 or the6.7? Have you heard of any consistent problems with either one?

Not that I would ever consider changing brands.:W

Thread after thread of modern diesel engine talk is making me really think we are in the dark days of technology (or, more to the point, emission ****). The pre-DPF diesels are largely talked about as the cream of the crop. Pretty sad considering they are now 10 years in the rearview. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel?

I feel like 30 years from now the freeways will look like Cuba with a bunch of 2000-2006 Chevy/Dodge diesels rolling around.

We are just in a transition period. No worries...

Back in 94 when Ford went to the Powerstroke there was a lot of concern about the new "electronically controlled" Diesel. To the point where, at least in my area, there was a run on IDI Turbo Diesels the "Pre Powerstroke" that was mechanical with "no electronics to fail"... There were some teething issues with the Powerstroke but now it's the Gold Standard in diesels.

I am shy from the new diesels...I am waiting to see the technology mature...but I think it's going very well..DEF seems to be a major part of the solution for the trucks.

I am curious to see how the DEF trucks do after the warranty expires and we get some real age on these trucks.

As for power...we are in the glory days...400 hp and 800-900 lb ft of tq...glory days.

Same goes for the gas HD trucks...we have the best ones we ever have.

New trucks today are truly remarkable pieces of technology.

Thanks!

If you're set on an '07 Ram I go with the 5.9 but if I was buying an old diesel pickup it would be an 06 or 07 Duramax.

It'll cost less to delete an early 6.7 than buy an exhaust brake for a 5.9.
I'd buy a 6.7 for the 6 speed auto but if going manual then a 5.9 would be preferable.
Overall, I'd shy away from early 6.7 Rams if you are opposed to deleting it down the road if you have recurring emissions problems. Seems 07.5-08 had more emissions issues than 09 up, they got it dialed in better just like the other mfg after a couple years under their belt.
Early 4th gen Rams are the same chassis and drivetrain as 3rd gen 6.7s with much improved cab/interior/amenities and with Rams new chassis and emissions in '14, they seem to he about the same price as late 3rd gens. I'd go for a '10-11 model if going used pre def Ram.
Hope they get your soon to be ex truck sorted out tomorrow........and economically!

You can add an exhaust brake to a 5.9. I had a Jacobs on my 03. I think in either 05 or 06 the 48RE transmission would work with one as well.

What did we do before exhaust brakes?

How are we even still alive? (/sarcasm)

Engine wise the 5.9 hands down.... Problem is the automatic transmissions were not known for reliability, but I would take my chances on it vs the early 6.7 with the emissions problems.

I had the 5.9 in my 2004 dually. Great truck, but no exhaust brake. I have had 3 more since and love the 6.7. Current one has 900 lbs of torque..

Makes me wonder if there was some other glitch that was causing the issue. Maybe colder weather not allowing the catalyst to get hot enough....etc....

If you are buying a mid 2000's Ram I would tell you to get the 5.9 CTD. The early 6.7 engines had some growing pains. The newer 6.7s with DEF and the redesigned frame are vastly superior... engine and the truck underneath it.

If you're looking to buy a 2007 the 5.9 would be my choice. Had a 2007 3500 Megacab dually and only problem I had was the soot getting into my trailer through the slide seals. It was a good ole truck and did all the proper maintenance the book called for. Many trouble free miles and years. Now I have a 2011 with the 6.7 and 6spd auto tranny. Loved the ole 2007 but the 2011 is a whole different animal. Think I'll hold on to this one for awhile.

I had an 07 6.7 for 9 years... No real problems at all... I bought a 15 6.7 as replacement.

Over the 5.9 it had the integrated exhaust brake... I loved it.
