Injector Issue

We were recently on a long trip and had an injector go out on our 2003 Silverado Duramax diesel. The truck had 99,325 miles on it. We took it to a Chevy dealer and had them replace all 4 injectors on the left, or drivers side, but didn't want to take the time to do the other side since we were traveling with a group. What are the odds that injectors on the other side will go bad and should we go ahead and replace them?

I would add a lubrication additive as your engine (mine also) was not intended to run on ULSD and it will cause premature wear in injectors and pumps. You can run two cycle oil, OPTI-LUBE XPD or FPPF to name a few.

Go to the Chevy Duramax Forums and ask around or read about the LB7. I have a 2006 LBZ, it ahd the corrosion problem with the Glow Plugs which Chevrolet refuses to pay for Dealer charged $940 for them. Will never buy another Chevy product and don't recommend them. If I can get one person to buy a Ford instead, Chevy will eat 940 anyway. At 70 K my injectors are balanced at .02-.03 for all 8 so that's a blessing

The 2006 glow plugs are covered under the emissions warranty which IIRC is 7 years. Had to tell the local dealer and GM where to find it in the warranty booklet as I was beyond the 5 years. Under the emissions, there is a $100. deductible after the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty. I had 3 separate failures. First was a $100. the second-several months later-was under a "good will" gesture and cost nothing. The third I went to Auto Zone and bought a new Bosch for $20.00 and changed it myself. Needed a set of deep well sockets. If I had known how easy they were to change I would have never let the dealer do the first one. There are some cases where they are all changed under warranty and other cases where the charge is $100 when the glow plugs show a certain OHM reading. Don't remember what it was but someone on the Diesel Forum gave it to me. Loved that truck so much that I bought a new 2013.

940 for glow plugs? Don't go to oriellys or rock auto and check price. You'll be very sad.

Yeah, because Ford has never had ANY issues, and NEVER denied warranty on their diesels.........

I have an 2004 LB7.......blowing smoke at 98000 miles....injector on one side, no good and of course one on the other side on the borderline.
So had to do all eight.
GM would do nothing for me so I bought 8 from Lincoln Diesel Specialties for half the price and they are going strong at 115K miles.
And a local dealer has a good mechanic who does the 13 hr job in 8.......so all it cost me $2500 instead of $4500.
Might as well do all eight, u don't want to do it again.

Yes, I already checked with GM, but they know how to cover their a** by only extending it for 7 years or 200,000 miles. Ours had half the miles but 3 years more on age and I would believe the miles would put more wear and tear on it than the age. That said, we cannot afford to trade trucks. As for the "crappy fuel" comment, how are you suppose to know whether the diesel fuel you put in your truck is crappy? Is there a test for it or something?

Chances are the some on the other side may go. GM extend the warranty on the injectors - you missed by the age of your truck:
General Motors has extended the Duramax 6600 fuel injector warranty coverage for owners of all 2001, 2002 & 2003 model-year Chevrolet and GMC Duramax 6600 equipped pickup trucks and 2003 medium-duty trucks. Issued 10/10/2006, GM Document ID#1866141 & recently #04039B indicates that additional injector warranty coverage is now available for a period of 7 years from the date the vehicle was placed into service or 200,000 miles - whichever occurs first.

The 2001 - 2004 Duramax LB7 diesels have a reported higher failure rate. Also the injectors are under the valve cover so it costs more to work on them. One of the reasons I traded my 2004 for a 2005.

Lb7 injector failure is common. Fix for reliability? Trade the truck for lbz or newer. There I said it.

Depends on WHY it went out. Maybe it was that statistically probable one-in-a-million bad ones that got through final testing and lasted this long, and there are NO other ones in all of creation like it in that regard. Or maybe you ran some really crappy fuel through it (and all the others, too) that ate 'em all up, and that was just the first one to go.

So, the answer to your question is not one anybody else can give you easily.
