Insurance coverage

Since we got a new camper I called our insurance company (Liberty Mutual) to add the new camper to our auto policy. They said they can't insure it since they'll only insure up to $24,999. When I informed them that they had no problem insuring our old camper up to $37,500 they looked back at the policy and said it was only insured to $7,500. The call dropped right after that. I call back and speak to someone else who informs me my camper is only covered to $4,500. I asked where the discrepancies were coming in but they couldn't answer.

Anywho....long story short I'm looking for a new insurance company. Who do you guys use? Are you sure you're covered for what it's worth? Bonus points if anyone has had to file a claim on their camper and succeeded. Thanks

ETA: does anyone have their combo insured as an RV? We don't use the truck as a daily driver and rarely even take the camper off. I'm checking with Liberty to see if this is an option.

guys, not to hijack the thread, but I dumped "progressive" years ago because of who they are and who they support. The name says it all.

Anyone who thinks their camper is automatically covered under either their auto or home owners policy would be well served to read their actual policy to confirm that coverage.

Most auto policies have very limited coverage for "additional equipment". The policies I have read usually limit that coverage to $5000.

Homeowners policies are the same.

Does it make sense that insurance coverage would cost the same for a vehicle that is valued at $50,000 (truck alone) as it would for one that is $80,000 (truck and camper)? Maybe some policies work that way, but I would make sure to read it and verify before you get into a situation where you need to make a claim.

Yea I would encourage everyone to call your insurance company and find out exactly what amount your camper is covered to and get it in writing. The first rep I talked to told me $37,500 was no problem. Second one said it was actually only covered to $7,500, then the third and fourth, who were supervisors said it was $4,500 and that homeowners would only cover it for liability so any damage or theft to it would not be covered at all if not on the vehicle.

I have had State Farm for a long time. When I got the truck I added it as another vehicle as I do with all new cars overs the years. For the camper the agent looked into it and it was added to my truck policy for an extra $50 per 6 months. I was told it is the same coverage as a vehicle, in other words for theft of collision it would cover the current value of the camper with the same deductibles.

I hope that I wasn't misinformed. I have an updated bill saying the camper was added to the truck vehicle policy so it looks good.

So I don't understand people saying State Farm covers the camper at no extra cost. The answer I got is that it is and added cost to the vehicle policy which I think may be called an extra endorsement.

Nobody ever told me that the camper is not be insured when it is not on the truck. But then if it is covered by the home policy that is ok, although there it sound familiar there are limits to the amount that these extras (for example, jewelry) are covered by a home policy.

No extra cost on either home or truck.

that's what i was told when i added the camper to the policy. rep told me it was no extra cost and covered while on truck and covered by homeowners when off.

i was informed tonight that it was covered to $4500 and if i wanted coverage up to $24,999 it would cost an extra $600/year. they then also said that when covered by homeowners it was only liability coverage...strange.

lesson learned. i should've had them rewrite the policy when we added the camper.

I have AAA. Took a bit for them to understand I was insuring a Truck Camper. The local phone rep had no idea what I was talking about, but she got the main office on the line and finally got things straight.

As mentioned abov, the TC is only insured on the auto policy when it's on the truck.

I have a unique situation where I bought my camper as a repossession. It was 2 years old but never used- it was essentially brand new with nothing inside ever been used or turned on. Refrigerator, microwave, heater… all brand new condition. The mattress still had the plastic on it. Everyone I tried wanted to insure it as a 2 year old camper and would not insure it for the condition it was in because I was not the original purchaser.

I found RV America (who underwrites through Progressive.) They had me get an authorized appraisal and I was able to get decent replacement coverage on mine. Give them a try:

Not a camper, but our 5er is insured through Progressive. 3rd RV we have had insured with them, and we have had 3 claims. All went smoothly.
