Kids are making buying a used diesel truck a chore..

Kids buying diesel trucks, jacking them way up, fartin around under the hood, hanging a set of huevos off of the bumper, is making finding a nice used diesel truck a real chore. Every dealership that sells trucks has these abominations in the lot. Where does a high schooler find $30,000.00 to drop on a truck?

Ha, yeah my first car was a ‘70 GTO... which was a cheap used car at the time...
we were NOT careful with those high powered but poor handling & braking cars back in the days of our youth, were we??!! My next one was a ‘55 Chevy that had even more motor and even worse handling and braking. The two miracles are I’m alive and I’ve still got that one!

They could be doing a lot worse things... Sounds like me in my youth.

BTW... I'm lucky to be alive as a teenager behind the wheel of a LS6 454.

Don’t bypass a truck because a dealer says it’s lifted, half the trucks I see in dealer ads around here claim they are lifted and they’re actually stock height.
There’s a 2nd gen Cummins for sale up here that the seller says has a “factory jake brake”.
They’ll say whatever... buyer beware.

Not to mention they put some of the ugliest ass wheels on along with fender flares that look like arse. Anytime I see "lift" or "level" on a used truck I bypass it. If you think the lifts or levels are bad, you should see some where they replace the factory radios or trim with "custom" made junk, and the work is terrible.

There’s bro dozers and the Cali lean and all sorts of nonsense, but a nice leveled 1 ton with nice wheels and 35” Toyos is a thing of beauty!

I know EXACTLY what the op is saying. It took me two years to find a laramie or longhorn 3500 dually 4x4 aisin, 4:10s, auto level , fifth wheel prep.. reno, nope, carson city, nope Towbin dodge las vegas?, nope, Mcpeek, anaheim, sacramento, nope nope nope!. Every darn truck was a short bed. Lots jacked up 20 feet in the air!. Went to DAVE SMITH Kellogg Idaho.. every dually was slt or tradesman!.Dave Smith has 400 trucks and not one darn thing im looking for. They did have two laramies, one aisin. No auto level or tow prep. He did have 5 KIDS trucks. Jacked up, big honking horny lookng rims and tires. Why does Ram make a truck capable of towing 30,000 lbs and NOT ONE DEALER CARRIES IT.. Finally found one with 1200 miles.. Sticker was 77400, bought for 61000!.. so it all worked out. Just took along time...

According to GM, the market for that kind of capacity is small (there excuse anyway). Since Ram makes you pay for that capacity with certain options, at the end of the day probably not many willing to opt for that kind of capacity if they have to pay more for it.

How hard was it to un-idiot it? Did you have to do anything with the drive shaft(s)? I have considered doing that. The average price around here for a clean looking jacked up truck is around $35,000.00. When I was in high school I had a low paying job and whatever I had I had to buy myself.

Jeep Wranglers might be the craziest. We were looking at buying one, a few years old to save some $$, and the used - and even well-used - ones are so close to the price of a new one it makes no sense to buy a used one.
It’s almost as bad with diesel pickups but the $75k for a nice brand-new diesel dually puts that in the “FORGET IT” category. There are things like boats and flying to tropical islands and hot rod cars to channel funds into. I can’t see spending that kind of money on a pickup truck.

Around here, the oilfields.

You can make $75-100k straight out of high school if you are willing to work two weeks on/one week off, bustin' ass work out in the middle of nowhere, twelve hour shifts, and the threat of being laid off every few years when the market goes bust.

Oilfield is paying better then when I worked derricks

$.85/hr flipping burgers OR $6.36/hr working derrick

Wasn't too tough of a decision.

Rent was $65/month and paid cash for my 1968 Charger and my 1966 Triumph

Lots of 'hot rodded' cars, trucks back in those days too

Just curious - was that '68 Charger equipped with the 360, 383 or, by chance a 440 CID with that delightful Hurst 4 speed quick shifter? Awesome memories I rekindle from time to time about my '69 Road Runner with the 440 6pack. SIGH! grumble grumble.

Cheers!

Mike

Not just kids. I often see the look at me trucks that have adults, male and female behind the wheel. Maybe they bought the truck from a kid and just haven’t had a chance to de-bling it...:B
