I'm just wondering I've got a new 1050S on order for my Dodge dually, but the Wife's having a difficult time thinking about getting rid of our old 880, (I'm in the process of finishing up the repairs after my speed bump encounter last summer). I just inherited my Mom's old 95 (she just recently passed) F-250 reg cab 4 x 4, it has an 8600 gvw. She used to haul an old S & S 8ft with out any problems of course.
We just thought that maybe with the proper up grades,(new wider rear whls, overloads, swaybar, etc etc etc etc, that maybe we could keep this setup for limited use for our kids to use. I know I have to weigh the truck, to find out its payload. I don't really know what the truck would weigh, I'm guessing around 5500-6000#'s (It has a 460 gasser). So this would leave around a 2600# payload & the camper weighs around 3100 + all the crap.
I'm not sure but I imagine this truck has a Dana 60, what's its capacity?. I just thought with the proper wheels & tires & springs as long as I don't exceed the axle rating we could make this work. I'm kinda "old school" I believe in making things safe, but not afraid to over load pickups to a point.
One of my thoughts on this is what I could do & deal with is different than letting my daughters & son in laws do. What's the feeling out there? Thanks for all your thoughts!

I wouldn't be afraid I bought my 880 from a couple that had it on a 96 F-250 supercab. I put it on my 96 dodge 2500 and now my 2004 3500 dodge srw. Only thing I did was upgrade tires and put on Stable loads. Really nice floor plan.

I have a 1988 Lance 780 sitting on my 1989 F250 Supercab and it sits just fine on there. The only modification to the suspension was the Firestone Ride-Rites on the rear, which came with my truck. You shouldn't have any problems.

I hauled a '92 Lance Squire 3000 0n my 88 Ford F250 4x4 standard cab with the 8600GVW and other then upgrading the tires to load range E, I never did anything to the suspension. Truck weight was 5400 with a 351W engine and 5 speed. Camper was about 3000 pounds. I say go for it, you'll do fine with the truck.

No help on the specs other than to say we love our old 880.

Even though we upgraded to a LQ horse-trailer last year, we kept the Lance on the chance we might take 1 or 2 camping trips without the horses, and the Lance works perfectly for this.

Good old campers.

Hey thanks Johnin, looks we would be OK with this set up with the proper upgrades. Now we just have to decide to spend the bucks & keep the old camper!

My '97 F250HD Super Cab long bed 4x4 with the 460 CI V-8 and automatic scales at about 5900 pounds with full fuel tanks. Your regular cab should be a few hundred pounds lighter I think. I carry a Lance 1010, 3700 pounds with full water and propane, empty holding tanks, minimal gear. Have airbags, adjustable Ranchos, anti sway bars, 3415 pound tires. No problems in 10 years, a couple of coast to coast to coast trips. Also pulls my Jeep or my motorcycle trailer no problems (other than the fuel yardage - 16,000 or less (that sounds better than 9 mpg or less)).

Your rear axle is a 2nd generation Sterling 10.25" most were full floating with 6250 lb ratings, but they did sell a semi-floating version with a lower 5300 lb rating on 7200 lb GVWR trucks. There was also a DRW version of the Sterling 10.25" with a 8250 lb rating, so don't get those specifications mixed in with what you have.
