Lance Cab Over Strut Bracket Location

When we purchased our 2013 Lance 1172 (NEW double slide) in 2013 the dealer mounted the cab over strut brackets at the edge of the front over hang where they normally are placed. The problem is we have shorter cab over struts from our 2003 Lance 1121, which are too short. In stead of purchasing new struts...I want to MOVE THE BRACKETS back about 6". Dealer said that was not recommended...but new brackets are over 600.00 and ours are fine just short. CAN THE BRACKETS COME BACK 6"...4 SCREWS MOUNT THEM INTO FRAME?

If anyone knows the answer...pls let me know.

ANYONE HAVE WORKING LONG STRUTS WHO WANT TO TRADE FOR SHORT ONES WE CAN CONSIDER.

Geo,
A man's got to do what he's got to do. We were in ID and a tree branch jumped out and punched a 1-1/2" wide hole in the TC epidermis. It was threatening rain, so I crawled up there with my duc tape to make a patch to keep the water out of the wooden frame. When we got home it was a month long process to take the edging strips off the nose and dry out the framing.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I might contribute some info that was not covered. I use the Lance Struts. I still like them as they do the job well, at least better at porpoising control than nothing, especially on a short bed. The TC feels more 'out of control' without them. They are kind of like a girdle, keeping things in control.
The main thing is to get them installed within the range of motion between the TC and the T. Every install is a little different as some have more front-down travel or more up-travel than others. Also, my TC is narrower so has that out angle considerably reduced compared to a wider camper.

Also, some trucks (older Fords namely) have more frame flex that you must take into account. You need to know the range of motion. You don't want the plunger going all the way in or all the way out to the limits. The factory struts are made to clear the door opening and to blend in with the A pillar keeping your view unobstructed.

If you use shorter struts than the factory recommends, you will need more compression/expansion length. Why? A strut (or non-gas charged, compression both ways, shock absorber, which this essentially is) has a shorter throw when the item is on an angle (60 degrees or so) than when in a more vertical position.
Early on, I pulled the screws on one of the struts right off the front of the camper frame while traversing a frame twisting trail. So, I installed bigger stainless steel screws in new holes and moved the upper bracket position forward a bit to stay farther from the edge. Since the screws tended to come loose over time, I applied some LocTite for wood screws and that solved it. Also learned to remove the struts entirely when on said frame twisting trails. THE most complicated thing about the struts was remembering that there are TWO pointed allen set screws, one on top of the other holding the sliding aluminum cast bracket on the aluminum TC track. I just about tore the thing to shreds before remembering that.

Hey, hey, hey. What did your parent tell you about climbing on the hood of the truck??

Thanks for the tip! I posted because the thread showed members with the struts. I did hook up with the Lance site now also.

Sorry! Found this topic thread searching for info and it covers what I'm looking for! Didn't know we can't communicate in "your" forum!

Please don't take it personal. . .it's that none bothered or considered pointing you toward the source of owners. It's not "my" forum but it seems that it would be the logical place for one to refer you to.

No posts for over a year...But does anyone still have any Lance cab over struts they want to sell? What length? Open & closed length? Mounts?
Thanks, Steve

I am measuring them pushed into cylinder...I can recheck and measure just the black cylinder to be sure. I will post that tomorrow, it is rainy here in Florida as I type.

How do you measure the struts? I have a set that has strut body length of 25.5 inches, but full extension is 37 inches.

I dont know if this might help. I was kinda amazed when $600 mentioned for a set of struts? so looked around- I gather more of a dealer item as I didn't find much. Some older threads here on the forum and at least one site shows 30.5" struts with camper side mounts for more like $450? (thats no truck brackets).
I did come across 'used' 30.5" struts at adventurerv.net. I don't know what 'used' means? if these are returns or what but $99@ might be worth contacting. I've bought a lot of stuff thru them. Other than that no endorsement

These folks, I never heard of, but show the set for $450.https://www.truckcampersupply.com/truck-accessories-cabover-struts

I was told today that Lance recommends them, but does not require them. Also was pointed out that they can interfere with the normal truck tie down struts. So I guess there is a plus and negative side to using them.

I have a set of 36" cab over struts, brackets, bracket washers (2) that I can sell if anyone is interested. Mine are too long for the Lance 1172 on my Dodge 2003, 3500.

Sounds like you got it done right, Gary. Worry free and you can still sell off the ones you have to recoup some of the cost.

Cheers!
