I have a 2000 F250 that currently has BFG Rugged Terrain tires on it. They probably have less than 8,000 miles on them but seem to have excessive cracking on the sidewalls where the tread cap attaches. BFG doesn't make this size any longer (stopped about a year after installation) and has issued a recall on 17" and 18" due to sidewall blow outs. Mine are not listed in the recall and I plan to visit my local Discount Tire store to see what they think. But I will be replacing them whether they will warranty them or not. I'm looking for recommendations on this size in load range E. Thanks

I will show 2 pictures, that show the inpact of treathprofile on howmuch the tire can deflect without overheating the rubber .
Used it to prove that an ofroad( looking) tire must have lesser deflection for savety then a road tire.

This picture shows that if the profile blocks cover a part of sidewall it leaves lesser sidewall to flex, or with same deflection more bending of the remaining sidewall so produces more heat at the overgoing of sidewall to treath.
If temperature of rubber goes above a sertain temp, the rubber hardens by producing to much sulfur bridges , and so the rubber structure damages, and every next bending of it tears it a bit furter loose and in the end a blowing tire. once the damage is done to the structure of rubber its ireversible.
What you now see is the beginning damage with those crackes.

These kind of tires need higher pressure then a road tire , to give it lesser deflection so lesser heat at the critical places, wich gives lesser comfort and gripp.

If you have next kind of tire with even more agressive profileblocks that cover almost half of the sidewall, I have seen picture of tore sidewall directly at the edges of the profile blocks.

So , besides using experiรซnce of others here, you can also yudge a new tire yourselfes by the profile.
If you only do on road driving , you better take a normal tire, and no offroad type.
And if do want an offroad type , dont take the agrasiv looking types as the last picture, but the middle type left on the first picture, and use an higher tirepressure for it .
I can help you with calculating a needed pressure for it , once you have one.

For me, Michelin, Michelin, Michelin LTX MS2 265/75/16-E. Mine have never cracked on the side walls etc. Very long wearing, excellent traction, and never a blowout yet in over 24 years of heavy truck camper and 5th wheel hauling. It's all I will have on any of our 2500 or 3500 trucks and the trucks for my business. Do NOT use tire shine etc coatings on your tires as it dries the rubber out and promotes premature cracking.

X2 on the Michelin LTX MS2 tires. I have the 265-75R/16-E on my 2500 D/A. Very great tires, but costly.

Had excellent results with these tires. FS Transforce is good tire also, I just have had better luck overall with the Michelins.

The newest model is called "Defender LTX M/S". I just ordered a set this afternoon in the size the OP is asking about. My OEM tires are pretty much gone after 12 years.

I ran Michelin LTX AT2 on my truck since new.....excellent tire but over priced.

I ran Cooper tires for years on other trucks and always got good service from those tires.

Recently it was time to replace the Michelins......so got a set of Cooper Discoverer ATP at Discount Tire.
Very pleased with those ----time will tell IF they are still a good option.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Travelnutz, you are certainly free to spend your money any way you want. However, I find your chosen brand very interesting, given your history of blasting forum members who choose foreign brands. I work for a major OEM tire manufacturer that is an American company (choosing not to say the name to avoid being accused of promoting my employer). Again, to be clear, how you spend your money is your business, not my business. However, it seems that you are being very inconsistent. Many tire companies build tires in the US, but only a small handful are actually American companies, and Michelin is not one of them. And, before you slam me for being a Mopar enthusiast, I fully know that FCA is Italian, but that is not the point of this post.

To the OP, sorry to hijack.

Goodyear makes an excellent tire as well. The Wrangler variants are very well respected.

I had 2 sets of Bridgestone Dueler Revos that I really liked, but they got really pricey, but they rode great, and lasted 55-60k miles. I got cheap and went to some Wild Country's and they lasted, but rode poorly. I now have some Cooper AT3's, and the ride pretty good, but only have about 15k miles, but seem to be doing well. I went with the Coopers based on reviews and the fact they are American owned and made.

I had similar deal with those tires. Discount tire and BFG were great. Thus warranted the old tires for life left and got me into a set of BFG all terrains for a modest upcharge.
