Good discussion but this is a very subjective topic. Everyone commute is different. Everyones lifestyle is different. Everyones finances are different.
Do you buy a 40K-60K tow vehicle so you can park it vs. driving it.
Do you ride around in a small commuter car vs. a large roomy truck.
Do you want a vehicle you actually enjoy being in vs. driving a vehicle that is less enjoyable/comfortable but provides savings.
WE all have different perspectives. I did not invest in my truck to park it, however I don't have a long commute.
I understand there is a tipping point were savings can be had via a commuter car. That savings can be real or imagined. The tipping point is different for each individual.

The thing that stops me from doing this is the cost of insurance.
I bought a new 2012 Civic. The money saved on diesel fuel covered the Honda fuel and car payment. My car insurance went down by adding a new car. The truck was no longer a primary driver. Oil changes are out of pocket extra.

I commute over 650 miles a week for my job. No way in the world would I drive my truck through that morning and afternoon mess. My little Cobalt has 192k miles on it and runs great. I sold my cavalier with 255k miles on it and it was running just as good as the day I bought it. The Colbalt is payed for, cheap on gas, insurance, and maintenance. I consider it a throw away car. Once its used up I'll get another one. I pretty much do not put any money into it unless I have to. So far only brakes and tires in the 9 years wife and myself have owned it.

Well, let's see. 250 x 52 = 13,000 miles @ say 15mpg =666 gals of fuel at say $3.75/gal = $3250.
A small car would get about 30mpg so 13000 miles would be =430 gals at $3.75/gal would cost about $1625.
So subtracting the two $3250 - $1625 = $1625 that you would save each year in fuel savings.
At these figures it would take you about 3.7 years to pay for itself in fuel savings.
Plug in your own actual figures for mpg, $/gal to get a better/worse cost savings.
Hope this was what you were looking for.

I also like the Sirius radio my truck has in it, and I feel a little more proud driving it than I would an old beater econobox.
