New diesel owner with questions

Dave_Jeanette

Have purchased our first diesel and was wondering what kind of items(parts) I should think about bringing along for our trip to South Dakota in a couple of weeks. The vehicle is a new F350 with the 6.7L Powerstroke.
Thanks for any info you more experienced diesel folks can share.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I already have a couple jugs of DEF and I will stop at the Ford dealer to get the spare fuel filters and PM22A additive.

I would certainly much rather have them with me and not need them than to run into a situation where I need them but don't have them.

Excellent... Enjoy the trip in an American truck! :B

OP: Have your fuel filters (2 of them on a Ford 6.7) changed every 20k miles, buy fuel from high volume locations like truck stops, and use Ford Motorcraft additive (DieselFiltersOnLine.com); you won't need any spares. Have your belt and all the other 100k maintenance done at 100k miles. DEF is sold at every Walmart, auto parts store, and truck stop. Really no need to haul a bunch around. It spoils in heat. Wait until you get the half tank warning or check the information screen, go 2 more fill ups, and then add a jug. It will use a jug around 4k mi. not towing and 2k towing up to maybe 1.5k towing in hot weather. Search dieselstop.Com for old posts--this engine has been out for 5 years. 55k mi. with no problems following this advice.

If you intend to change the fuel filters on the road, the housing for the lower filter is easy to crack. I suggest that you either carry a spare and a strap wrench or have it done at a Ford dealer. See the FTE Forum for much useful information.

There was a recent recall for the EGT sensor programming that could shut you down. Make sure that the recall is completed if it applies to your truck. I bought a spare sensor because they were in short supply for awhile, but you should be OK now, but ask.

Get the hose assembly for the DEF jugs at a Ford dealer, it makes filling almost fool-proof.

The EGT sensor recall doesn't apply to the OP 2015 truck. But I do agree that Fords DEF spout assembly is the ticket and eliminates spills.

There's nothing like having a truck that's built in the USA by a US company! Love it! :B

I strongly suggest only running Ford's additive - PM22A. Get a couple of the 20oz bottles and keep them in the truck.

Also read about the DEF system in your owner's manual diesel supplement. You should fully understand what will happen if you start running low on DEF fluid, or worse yet, run out completely. Once you read this, you will never, ever, want to run out. I carry a 2.5 gallon jug of DEF in the 5er (but I full time). When I know it's below half full, I add the jug and buy another one.

IMHO Ford does not do a very good job of keeping the driver informed of the DEF level in the tank. With my '13 model, you do not get an alert on the driver info panel of low level until it's really low.

Suggest a tow dolly pulling a gas powered truck so you'll have something to drive that is not dependent on watered down diesel, bad injectors, failed injector pump, bad egr cooler, overheating, etc. .... Hey just kiddin'

in my 10 years and 250,000 miles driving two diesel trucks I've yet to get my filters clogged.

Same here but I always had one with me :W Actually one winter I had a gel issue but that wasn't because of the filter and in was in the garage, not on the road.

I like Archoil fuel additive. Only need a tiny bit per tank so don't have to carry a case with you.

With all the stuff being suggested to bring a second truck may be needed. 😉

I've never brought anything with me and never needed it till the motor blew (2004 Excursion with the 6.0 ) Then I just needed a new truck... So I bought a Ram 2500..
