New Diesel PU

Well. I finally did it!
Stepped up an ordered a new F350 Crew 4x4 6.7 pickup.
Ordered because it has to be brought in from Idaho.
Bought it thru a local Ford dealer after doing a bunch of searching on the interwebs for one set up the way I wanted it. Got a good price but not great one.

Anyway never having owned or driven a diesel pickup before is there any thing I should do right away besides drive and enjoy? Any thing to be aware of?

We will be heading to SoCal and AZ in about 6 weeks with it and our TT for a few months.

The new Ford SD's are nice, but they seem to rock chip very easily. I think the GM's do as well. I would invest in some clear bra for the new pickup and of course adequate mud flaps.

Yep.... Still call them gas stations.

OP,
Note to self.... Always fuel up with diesel.

X2. I find myself double and triple checking the signage on the pump prior to starting to fill as I get older!:B

From memory my 2012 6.7 recommended varying the speed for 500 miles and no towing for 1000 miles, but read the man to get the current recommendation. It could be that only 3% of the trucks made need a proper break-in--do you want your truck to be in that 3% and have problems--just follow the guidance. Be VERY careful about fuel (to the extent that you can) because ethanol, gasoline, or water in the fuel will blow up the hp pump and ruin the injectors. MANY people have no problems with their fuel systems, however, why test the odds. The Motorcraft fuel treatment adds lubricity to help protect the pump, as well as de-mulsifying water so the filter can catch it. Dieselstop.com is a good web site for Ford owners.

I think asking this question would have served you well BEFORE buying the truck.

Diesels are not a gas engine the turbos build a lot of heat when towing, even unloaded in hills. Give 30 to 60 seconds to cool when parking.

Be prepared to be impressed and have a permanent grin on your face. :B After 130k miles on my diesel I still get that :B to this very day.

Best thing to do is to read the diesel supplement manual. Get fuel from high volume gas stations and use Motorcraft fuel filters.

In addition use only Motorcraft air filters too. Seen several "made in china" after market filters tore apart.

X2. The new Super Duties are pretty sweet!

You may want to use the Ford recommended fuel additive to help avoid any HPFP problems. As others have said try to fuel up at high volume stations for good, fresh fuel. These will go a long way for a long life for that truck.

Please let us know your thoughts after you tow with it!

Just drive it and keep up with maintenance. Enjoy the exhaust break. Keep up on fuel filter changes. Look at the Ford forums. There are several to choose from. Make friends with a Cummins guy in case you ever need pulled home.

Your manual should tell you the proper break-in procedure. I would follow it.
However, when I first bought my '05 Chevy dually I drove it home from the dealer at 70 and 75 MPH on the interstate. Then I hitched up the boat and went to the lake. When I got home and read the manual I found it said not to exceed 55 mph or tow for the first 500 miles. Opps. The truck now has 222,000 miles on it and has been extremely reliable and problem free.
