Newer Cummins with Exhaust Fluid

I used to own a 2008 Cummins and although I never had trouble with it I heard many folks having issues with the emissions back then. I'm tossing around the thought of getting a 2015 Cummins and I'm just wondering what they're like now with the exhaust fluid? Are they pretty reliable? Does the fuel economy still around 12mpg empty? Thanks for any info I can get on this truck. I understand all Diesels these days have the exhaust fluid but if I got a truck it would be more likely a Cummins as they are better and cheaper than Fords and Chevys usually. Thanks....

I have about 12000 miles on my 2014 srw with 3.42 rear end. I average 15 to 17 mpg everyday driving around town with a little freeway driving. 7o mph on interstate no head wind and I can coax 22mpg out of it. Towing 14,000 I get 10 to 12mpg usually in the high tens. All hand calculated. The computer usually reads about two mpg higher than hand caculated.

This is slightly better towing than the 2005 cummins I had but I could do slightly better on the highway not towing. BUT, considering the extra power with 2015 and the improved handling all I can say is that I love it.

I have yet to pull my 5er with the "14" and at 5500 miles only added 2 gal. of DEF. It's sitting on 3/4 now. I am sure it increases usage once the 5er is hooked up. I was apprehensive about the DEF at first but quickly overcame that. I have not hand calculated mileage but the computer shows 19 to 20.5 running two lane mountain highways. Great going down the mountain but not so great coming back up. Its hard to find anything to complain about with these new Rams.

I have a 2014 Cummins CC Laramie 4x4 2500. Around town it averages right at 15 hand calculated, and about 18 at 75 on the highway. Overall mileage is about the same as my old 2005 5.3 GMC Sierra. Towing the 10,000 pound trailer at 65-70 it drops down to around 11. DEF system runs a 2.5 gallon jug about every 1000 miles. No DEF problems in 11,000 miles, I am just amazed at how clean the inside of the exhaust pipe stays. I know that emissions control is a sore subject for some people, but I have grown quite fond of breathing and the new generation of diesels not belching black smoke all the time makes that a little easier.

Yeah my wife and I drove a tradesman and really liked it. We then tried to sneak out of there to get some other things done and the salesman spots us and says where ya going? Uh, we gotta get some lunch... He has a key fob in his pocket and says jump in that Laramie right there and bring it back after lunch... The rest is history.

This week I drove to work in the truck every day, 37 miles one way 2000 ft elevation gain. Slightly less than half tank registering and gas mileage is reading 19.4. All highway miles this round. A little stop and go to get to the highway.

That is awesome mileage. Get these things warmed up and the mileage really improves.

Thanks for al the info guys. Went for a test drive this evening and I think tomorrow is the big day. Will keep you posted. Drove a 2015 4x4 tradesman but spotted out a 2014 leftover Laramie 4x4 that I fell in love with and that I can get a awesome deal on. Gonna call my credit union in the am.....

Whatever you do DON'T sit in a LongHorn!!!!!!!

I did and look what happened to me. :B

I got to drive Ron's new 2015 Longhorn 40 miles to dinner the other night! REALLY nice truck! Coming home Ron did a standing start on a freeway on ramp. We were doing 91 MPH as we merged onto the freeway lane!!!!! And the ramp was slightly uphill, four people in the truck, hitch in the bed and who know what in the box!!!

Chris

It was funny because Chris' wife kept poking him in the back of the head on the way to dinner saying "we need to get one of these" !!! Just kidding, she did like it!

This is what I look like driving my new RAM!

My Ram doesn't do too bad on mileage...16-17 empty @ 65mph...15.5 @ 70mph. If I could run 45 all the time I could get 19-20. Speed and wind resistance certainly makes a difference.

Comparing my new Dually RAM with 4:10's to the 11 Dually RAM with 3:42's I just traded in I am for sure getting better mileage. Looks like 1-2 mpg better.

Nothing to be afraid of. In my daily driver it is regarded as offering better performance and fuel economy than the similar engine without DEF in smaller, lighter models.

Well, last week took my Ram on a good road trip. All told, about 1200 miles total.

Going north, good tail wind and dash showed averaging 19 MPG. Gotta love it here in the upper mid-west cause it is always windy, so having it blow the right direction is priceless.

Then west bound and side winds dropped it to around 17 MPG average.

Well, the next two days of the trip were brutally cold, and terrible winds, some gusts hitting 50 MPH. And no more tail winds.

The average MPG dropped to 13.5 MPG. Considering the winds, not really that bad.

Finally headed home and windy conditions had subsided. Two lane roads mostly at about 67 MPH. The average MPG when I pulled in my driveway was back at the 17 MPG mark.

I'm happy with that. I was NOT towing, no cargo weight, and had the Truxedo box cover on. Mind you, I do not subscribe to the idea that the Truxedo or any box cover helps improve mileage. But was planning on hauling some furniture back from my sister's house, and wanted something in place to protect them from the elements.
