Anybody towing 5 th wheel around 9,000 # with this truck ? Thoughts. Comments.

in my opinion its a heavy half ton, no more but for a heavier tow behind I suspect it would work quite well as it does weigh more than every other 1/2t out there and that Diesel while down on power compared to the current 3/4-1T competitors is by no ways a slouch.

I might try one just for the heck of it at some point.

I'm starting to look for a truck to replace my 2002 1500HD, and I thought the XD might fit the bill to pull my 8000lb TT. I think the size is about perfect for what I need. The problem, was I can be a full 3/4 ton for about the same price, and have a more capable truck. Also the fuel economy stinks on all of them, but the XD seemed as bad or worse than a 3/4 ton.

Is the 5ver 9K Gross, or empty.
A general rule of thumb. 25% of the 5ver weight is pin weight. If 9K is actual weight, then 2200# is pin.

To the OP, Nissan is one of the few manufactures that will specify a max pin weight for each trim level of the truck so check this out before you buy. Some of the new 5th wheels are being designed with less pin weight to fall better in line with SAE tow standards. If it were me I wouldn’t exceed 1800 lbs max, but there are quite a few that are towing with pin weights that are higher. If there’s any doubt then move up to a higher rated truck for sure.

I've been very happy with mine. I tow a travel trailer roughly 8300 lbs loaded to camp. Not apples to apples because of the 5er vs TT but it pulls it exceptionally well. Compared to the 2014 Ram 2500 I had previously it rides great for a daily driver. 16k miles on mine and couldn't be happier.

The truck isn't for everyone, but I have been pleased with mine. I bought it in late April. It is a diesel XD in SL trim, crew cab 4x4. I got 16k off the sticker before factoring in the equity of my trade.
I have 12k miles on it, with about 3500 of those miles towing my 7500lb travel trailer. Coming from a half ton it is much more stable. The truck was fairly sluggish when brand new but started to come alive around 6-7000 miles. I now get 12 mpg towing, combined around 16-17 mpg, and have even achieved 25.1 on all highway. The payload is the only disappointment for me, so, mine would not work for almost any fifth wheels.
I was surprised to see my neighbors 2016 F250 diesel only has about 1900 lbs payload according to his door sticker, but I understand there is a reason for the adjusted payload rating.

I assume you mean 3/4 ton. I just looked up the payload on the 2017 F250 models. It runs from 3,305 to 4,267 lbs. What year are you pulling these numbers from? It seems to me if you are going to make a comparison the trucks should be from the same year. Please provide the year, models and their respective payload ranges.

A 9000 lb 5th wheel will have an 1800 lb pin weight. Add a 5th hitch, odds and ends in the bed, passengers, etc and you're over the 1800 lb payload.

Do we really need to cover this again? Those F250s are the same as F350s with a class restricted 10k lb GVWR that limits the almighty payload sticker.

It’s a half ton with a Diesel engine. You will run out of payload same as a GM or Ford 1500 series. 9000 lb 5th wheel your talking 1700 lbs of pin, plus hitch plus stuff, you’ll need 22-2300 lbs of payload minimum.

They aren't materially cheaper than full HD diesels and don't get better mileage either. Nissan missed the mark on this one, and I'm one who thinks Nissans are generally really good vehicles. I had almost 200k miles on a first gen Xterra based on the old hardbody that was bulletproof.

Go for the big brother Cummins in the Ram.
